Grand Display
located in the Pliada di am Imperium during Fete Week on Coruscant, the Grand Display was part of the annual Imperial Fair. Member worlds from across the Empire produced wondrous works of art for display. (SWJ5)

Grand Duhka
the Noghri meeting place in Nystao, where all the various clan dynasts and/or maitrakhs meet to discuss planetary issues. It is also referred to as the Common Room of Honoghr. (DFR)

Grand Dukha
this was the name given to the primary meeting place of the Noghri government, located in the city of Nystao. It was also referred to as the Common Room of Honoghr, since all Noghri tribes were allowed entrance. Similar in many respects to the dukhas in each village, the Grand Dukha was more than just larger. Its roof was formed of metal, and the pillars which supported it were made of black stone. The wide, front steps were created from red-and-black marble, and the entrance sat along a gray-stoned terrace. Because of these distinct differences, it was believed that the Grand Dukha had actually been built by the Empire, to mimic the village dukhas. (DFR)

Grand Hall
this was the primary walkway of the Old Republic's Senate Rotunda building, located on Coruscant. (JQ5)

Grand Halls
these ancient buildings displayed some of the most wondrous of Utapaun architecture, until they were refitted for use as factories by the Techno Union during the Clone Wars. (X3)

Grand Horn Ranch Corporation
this was one of the largest nerf ranches found on the planet Fennesa, during the last decades of the Old Republic. (WOTC)

Grand Hypergate
located in the ruins outside the city of Satikan, on the planet Asation, this Gree hypergate is thought of as the last remnant of the most ancient and forgotten days of Gree civilization. The Grand Hypergate is actually a circle of seven archways surrounding a central obelisk. The archways are individual hypergates, and the obelisk seems to serve as their control point. The gatemaster of Satikan no longer remembers how to use the Grand Hypergate, although he tries on weekly basis to discover their modes of operation. This weekly attempt to activate the hypergate has taken on a ritualistic feeling. The gatemaster does know, though, that two of the seven gates terminate on Gree, one on Te Hasa, one on Malanose, and a fifth on Licha In. (SWJ8)

Grand Imperial
one of the luxury resorts run by the Empire on Kaal. (SWJ7)

Grand Imperial Union
this affiliation of former Imperial Moffs and their followers was formed in the years following the Battle of Endor. Led by Moff Tragg Brathis, the Union threw its support to Nil Spaar and the Yevetha during their battle against the New Republic. Although Spaar produced a transmission showing Brathis and a fleet of imperial warships, the existence of the Union was never proven. (TT)

Grand Isle
this large island, found on the planet Vladet, was formed from an old volcanic cone. The Empire built a base there, using the natural geothermal energy to power its shield generators. The reason for the base was outwardly claimed to be to discourage piracy in the Rachuk System. (XWN)

Grand Kessel River
a river which runs through a beautiful valley on the planet Kessel, Trioculus blew up the dam that held it back and flooded the river valley, eliminating some troublesome villagers. Note that this is one of the many inconsistencies that crops up regarding Kessel's environment in this series of books. (QE)

Grand Lobby
this was the name given to the spectacular entranceway of the Hotel Drofo, located on the asteroid Oseon 6845. (LCF)

Grand Magnus
this was one of the highest political positions recognized by the natives of the planet Xerton 9. (SWJ3)

Grand Mesra Plateau
this vast flatland separated Mos Espa from Mos Eisley, on the planet Tatooine. Located at its northern end was the palace of Jabba the Hutt. (IWE1, IWST)

Grand Ministry
this Imperial City edifice housed the various minstries which oversaw day-to-day activity for the New Republic. The building istelf was once part of the Imperial Palace, and served Palpatine as a reception hal. (SOL)

Grand Moff
an Imperial governor, presiding over a sector of the galaxy which has been denoted as a priority sector by the Emperor. The Grand Moff's jurisdiction may span one or more sectors, incorporating part of all of the space ruled over by a Moff. (SW, ISB)

Grand Moff Bank
this was the name of a specialized obstacle used in swoopchasing. It consisted of a large, natural bank or berm which the racers had to fly over. However, a Repulsor-Out obstacle was mounted atop the bank. This required that a racer must accelerate in order to get to the top of the hill, then cut acceleration in order to overcome the Repulsor-Out wall. Once over the wall, the racer had to maneuver their swoop back down the bank. (BSS)

these are the primary societal bodies of the Arcona race. (GMS)

Grand Oradin Hotel
located in the city of Oradin, on the planet Brentaal, this was the city's most luxurious hotel. It was here that Whistler and Gate had arranged to meet with Talon Kaarde, after they escaped from Ysanne Isard's complex with news of the survival of Rogue Squadron. (IR)

Grand Palace of Gala
this building was the seat of the Beju-Tallah Dynastry's power. Although much of the city of Galu was quite run-down during the last years of the dynasty, the Tallah's managed to maintain the palace's beauty. Built atop the talles of the three hills of the city, the palace was visible from any location in the city. Blue and green gemstones studded the exterior surface of the temple, making it sparkle and shine in the limited sunlight of the planet Gala. The palace ground were covered with wondrous gardens and plantings, which contained samples of virtually every species of plant found on Gala. (HP, MOC)

Grand Piazza
this vast avenue, formed from azure marble flagstones surrounded by golden serpentine, was located in front of the Anaxes Citadel on theplanet Anaxes. It was on the Grand Piazza that triumphant parades of military forces patrolled, during both the Old Republic and the New Order. The center of the Piazza, formed from the azure marble, was known simply as the Azure Walk. The golden walkways surrounding it were referred to as the Serpentine Walk. Lining the outer edges of the Piazza were thirteen portals: two leading to the quarters of the cadets and newly-commissioned officers of the fleet, two leading to the rooms set aside for visiting dignitaries, six leading to the offices of the commanders who were stationed on Anaxes, two which allowed the Anaxsi population to witness the spectacles and parades, and a final door known as the Last Door, which led to the crypts. Grand Protector
the ruler of the Rodian race, known as the Inta'si'rin'na in the Rodian tongue. The original Grand Protector was from the Soammei clan. Although the Grand Protector was considered the leader of all Rodians, the real power remained within the rin'na of the clan from which he was promoted. (SCRE, SPG)

Grand Races
this was the name used to describe the series of podracing events held annually on the planet Malastare, during the last decades of the Old Republic. (LEV)

Grand Reception Hall
the kilometer-long location in Imperial City where dignitaries from across the galaxy have been received by the galaxy's rulers, the Grand Reception Hall was located near the Petrax District on the planet Coruscant. At the time of Coruscant's capture by the Yuuzhan Vong, the Grand Reception Hall was the oldest continually-operating governmental building on the planet. It was nestled among several tall skyscrapers, so very little natural light reached the building's open-air ceiling. Access to the Hall required that aircars descend between the skyscrapers, dropping through "the well" in order to reach the Hall. (DFR, CCW)

Grand Reception Hall
this was the largest public buildings found in the city of Curamelle, on the planet Corulag, during the last decades of the Old Republic. It served as the location for some of the most elaborate corporate and governmental galas and fetes. (GCG)

Grand Rim Promenade
this section of the Canyonade on Cejansij was a 300-year-old section of walkway, located about two-thirds of the way up the Canyonade's east face. It was about 30 meters wide at its widest point, and stretched well over ten kilometers along the canyon wall. It was held up without any repulsorlift assistance, including the many skyarches that spanned the canyon itself. (SOP)

Grand Royal Hotel
this was the most expensive and most exclusive hotel located on Estalle Island, on Procopia, during the New Order. (LOE)

Grand Stairway
located within the central towers of the Mos Espa Arena, this wide, spiralling staircase took visitors to the uppermost levels of the arena. Many race fans gathered near the stairway to watch for their favorite racers. (IWE1)

Grand Trench
a network of steep canyons on the moon Gall, the Grand Trench was the location of the Imperial enclave on the moon. (SE, SESB)

Grand Walkway
this wide avenue encircled the main bubble building of City Bigspace, found in the city of Otoh Gunga on the planet Nabo. A large straight section bisected the outer circle. (IWE1, GMR4)

Grand Warden
this was the title given to the "absolute ruler" of Coruscant's University of Yabol Opa. (IWE2)

Granda Dolma
this Aqualish was one of the many gladiators who tried to win their freedom from the arenas of Rattatak, during the final years of the Old Republic. (CWSB)

Grande Hyet
this small, polar island is found on the planet Esseles. During the Galactic Civil War, a group of Alliance supporters known as the Faceless attacked and destroyed an DynaCorp fuel depot located there. The attack was timed to coincide with an attack on the Imperial outpost at Tralee. (SWJ9)

Grandeel
this planet was known for its fish farms. (GG2)

Grandfather Clock
this was the nicknme used by the Hutts to describe the Novolek Beacon, because of its regular pattern of flares. (SSR)

Grandfather's Shoulder
this was one of the most prominent volcanoes found on the Korunnal Highlands of the planet Haruun Kal. At any one time, a dozen or more open caulderae were spewing lava and ash, as well as toxic gases into the atmosphere. (SHPT)

a Singing Mountain clan sister who has turned to the Dark Side and joined the Nightsisters. (CPL)

Granit
this man was a member of the Alliance, sent to the planet Delantine to bolster support for the rebels. When the Empire took control of the system, Granit led the evacuation of Alliance supporters. He was also responsible for the rescue of Stuart Zissu, R2-D2, C-3PO, and 4B-X from the planet Da'nor, where they had crashed while en route to Delantine. (SA2)

Granite Slug
found on Coruscant, these grey-green amoeba-like creatures had eyestalks and mouths which are underneath their bodies. They prefered to live underground, and moved about by using a thick foot and several suction pseudopods. They were introduced to Coruscant some 346 years before Furgan attempted to assassinate Mon Mothma, in an attempt by the Old Republic to clean up the garbage that existed in the lower level of Imperial City. Because of the amount of garbage (a fact not realized by the old government), the population of granite slugs exploded. This resulted in an rapid improvement in the cleanliness of Imperial City, but also caused a rise in the number of predators that found the slugs appetizing. (JS, DA, JASB)

Granley, Amos
this young man was a friend of Denel Moonrunner, and was conscripted into the Imperial armed forces when the Empire subjugated the planet Rhamalai. (SWJ13)

Granna
this planet is the homeworld of the Grannan race. It was controlled by the Empire during the Galactic Civil War. (TT)

Grannan
a near-human race native to the planet Granna. A group of Grannans settled the planet Polneye in the Koornacht Cluster. They were distinguishable by the skin cuffs located on their hands and feet, into which they can draw their fingers and toes. They also have loose eye creases, and special respiratory sacs which allow them to breathe methaogen. (BTS, SOL)

Grannell
this New Republic Lieutenant served as a ferry pilot aboard the fleet carrier Venture. Grannell served under Lietuenant Bos in Bravo Flight. (TT)

this man, a native of Parmel Sector, researched the history of the droid GSAD-43. (FTD)

Granse Confederacy
a well-structured coalition of bounty hunters and trackers, the Granse Confederation appeared on the galactic scene shortly after the Battle of Yavin. The group had just eight members, but all were formerly employed in some form of criminal organization, and were known for their abilities to locate and eliminate "problems." The Confederacy was founded by Callandri and her cousin, Zayl Braith, and its membership included the aliens Kiran Tatch, Arcuse, Rodick Tag, Milscass, Vadon Lenitor, and Lu'daal-ud. Many within the Alliance's command structure believed that the Confederacy was formed specifically to assassinate Alton Lochner, given Callandri's grudge against him, but this was never proven. Grant
the so-called "Last Grand Admiral," this Imperial Navy officer was a native of the Tapani Sector. A former noble, Grant was known for his disdain of aliens and droids, an aristocratic trait that fit in well with Imperial doctrine. However, his haughty demeanor didn't sit well with the Moffs, and Grant wsa often snubbed in the political arena. Because of this, he was the last of the Grand Admirals that anyone would have believed would be the one to survive the longest. In the aftermath of the Battle of Endor, Grant found himself without a political sponsor, and ws forced to seek sanctuary within the Pentastar Alignment. After seeing many of the other Grand Admirals kill themselves in petty border disputes, Grant defected to the New Republic on the condition that he be granted diplomatic immunity. The New Republic believed that all the Grand Admirals had been accounted for, in the wake of the Battle of Endor, but had not learned of the existence of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Grant would have gladly helped the Republic defeat Thrawn, but no contact was ever made with him at his retirement villa on Rathalay. (ECH, SWI66)

Grantaloupe
this large mammal was native to the jungle of Kashyyyk, where it was hunted for food by the Wookiees. (SWDB)

Granus IV
the Alliance intelligence agent Tigor Sims was forced to crashland his courier whip on this planet, shortly after the Battle of Yavin. (RESB)

Granzor, Karn
this pirate captain owned the Sable II, with which he ambushed potential targets. He was known for his desire to obtain a ship's cargo without killing the crew and passengers, a trait which he passed on to Drek Drednar. He was later killed by Drednar and a number of other former associates, who had deserted Granzor's crew and set out on their own. (SWJ5)

Graph 18
this was a model of directional transponder used by scouts and military personnel. Like its smaller cousin, the survey datapad, this briefcase-sized device contains topographical information on a variety of planets. This data is easily updatable from commercial sources. The Graph 18 provides up-to-the-minute charting of the unit's location on a given planet, allowing field personnel to track their progress without getting too lost. The Graph 18 can store information on up to 25,000 different planets. (ROE)

Graphyt, Pentix
this bounty hunter pursued Shandria L'hnnar after she stole the plans for Project Orrad, on Venaari, but was unable to capture her. A huge man who wore an elaborate suit of protective armor, Graphyt was one of several bounty hunters kept on retained by Major Daraada as a former of security for Project Orrad. Under the Delta Emergency Code, Graphyt was known as Special Operative 1312, and was called in when Shandria stole the plans and tried to escape. During their struggle, Shandria managed to activate Graphyt's jetpack, sending the bounty hunter into the midst of the Imperial forces who were fighting the underground rebels in the Southern Reach. Graphyt struck two Imperial combat speeders, causing a huge explosion that allowed Shandria and Sienn Sconn to escape. (SWJ5)

Grapler
an Pakuuni Corvette destroyed during the Galactic Civil War. (TIE)

Grapnel Line
this blaster-like tool was used to fire a filament cord at a target. The end of the cord was connected to a claw-tip that could dig into rock or metal, securing the line at the far end of the shot. The other end of the cord was secured to the gun itself, providing the user with a way to span short distances. The cord could also be used as a pendulum, with the user hanging onto the gun end and swinging across a chasm. When used this way, a button or switch could release the claw-tip from its hold, then the filament could be recoiled and used again later. (HIV)

Grappa
meaning "aggressive", this was one of the most common names among Rodian males. These names generally described characteristics of historical individuals, and different Rodian clans used up to three names to describe an individual. (GCG)

Grappa
this Hutt controlled his criminal empire from the planet Genon. Grappa had ties to Black Sun, and his legendary ruthlessness helped ensure that traffic to the planet was kept to a minimum. Grappa had a tattoo of an evil skull placed on his forehead. Mirith Sinn offered to pay for Grappa's help in hunting down Kir Kanos, a deal to which Grappa heartily agreed. Grappa then traveled to Smarck, where he purchased the real Feena D'Asta from Macus Kayniph for a shipment of gree spice. He then developed a plan, with the help of Y'ull Acib and Black Sun, to replace Xandel Carivus with a clone, thereby placing their own puppet in control of the Imperial Interim Ruling Council. He also served as the mediary between the Zanibar and the Empire, after Zzzanmxl's forces caught Kir Kanos on Xo. However, the clones developed by Macus Kayniph and sent to eliminate Carivus were killed, and their link to Black Sun was exposed by the Council. Grappa was forced to rethink his plans when Y'ull Acib decided to visit Genon, following the New Republic's raid on Kayniph's cloning facility. New Republic forces then confronted Grappa, led by Mirith Sinn herself. She ordered Grappa to return Feena D'Asta and Kir Kanos, then locked the Hutt in one of his own holding cells. When the Zanibar arrived to demand their bounty, Grappa was unable to produce the money they expected. Zzzanxml and his troops quickly captured Grappa and transported him to Xo for one of their sacrificial ceremonies, and the Hutt was never heard from again. (CE2)

Grappa
this Rodian mercenary Captain was the leader of the force hired by the Osarians to protect them from attack by the Rhommamoolians, two decades after the Battle of Endor. He led what was known as the Osarian First-Force, intercepting Leia Organa Solo before she could meet with Nom Anor on Rhommamool. (VP)

Grappler
this was one of the Empire's Interdictor cruisers, operating in the period leading up to the Battle of Endor. (XWA)

Grappler
this was a form of Sekotan starship created by the living planet to "fight without fighting" against the poisoned coralskipper sent to attack the planet by Supreme Overlord Shimrra, during the final battle of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy. Resembling red and green insects, the grapplers used unusual gravitic weaponry to drag down and coralskippers they encountered, allowing Zonama Sekot to deal with the ships and their contents. (UF)

Grappler
this was the codename used by Su-mil, during his duty with the Aurek-Seven unit of the Imperial 501st Legion of stormtroopers, serving the Empire of the Hand some twenty-two years after the Battle of Yavin. Like his companions Watchman, Cloud, and Shadow, Grappler accompanied Chak Fel on the mission to locate the Outbound Flight Project in Chiss space, some three years before the Yuuzhan Vong began their invasion of the galaxy. Grappling Magnet
this large disk is connected to a length of strengthened cable. It can be launched from a stationary position or from a starship, and is designed to fasten to another metal object. They are often used in space to drag or capture a starship into position near a spacedock, but can also be used to slow a dead ship's progress. (VOF)

Grappling Missile
this projectile was actually a tool and not a weapon, despite its name. The grappling missile was a projectile that could be fired at a stationary target, with a strong cord trailing behind it. When the missile impacted with its target, it buried its head deep into the material, then extended heavy-duty tines to lock the missile in place. The user could then climb up the cord to reach a lofty location, then retrieve the missile for later use. (BF5)

Grappling Ray
this was another name for a tractor beam. (MC1)

Grasha, Pen
this pirate served as Urias Xhaxin's starfighter control officer aboard the Free Lance. (DTO)

Grashal
this unusual creature was developed by the Yuuzhan Vong as a bio-engineered building or command center, created like their other structures by the secretions of the gricha larva. When fully constructed, the grashal resembled a huge mollusk shell, accessible via a staircase which led to a nexus of tunnels and inner chambers. They could be grown in a number of configurations, standing up to three meters in height and up to sixteen meters in length. (DTO, EGA)

Grasheel
this fashionable, sable-furred Wookiee was a friend and first mate to Shamus Falconi. Grasheel always was on the leading edge of fashion, and often wore his fur braided with gems or trinkets. Large earrings, scarves, and jewelry were constantly changing his appearance. Many people are frightened by Wookiees, and the sight of a brightly-jeweled beast is often unsettling. Many of the jewels and trinkets braided into his fur had special, personal meanings. A large hoop earring was given to him by a Socorran smuggler. This habit was formed at an early age, when Grasheel was sold into slavery. Any possessions he did not keep close to his body were stolen. He maintained the habit after he was rescued by a group of Algor pirates, from whom he learned starship engineering. After a strange occurrance in a spacer bar called the Airlock, Grasheel ended up owning half of the Lumrunner, and he found himself in business with Shamus Falconi. Their partnership was a long and fruitful one, as they plied the spcae lanes of the Minos Cluster. (SWJ9)

Grashk
an angry young Wookiee, Grashk joined the Alliance and worked with Almera Zan to try and rescue Enid Vahr from Demophon. (SN)

Graskt
this man served as the Assistant Director of the Treitamma Political Center, shortly before it was destroyed by Armand Isard in an effort to assassinate Garm Bel Iblis. Graskt died in the explosion, along with Bel Iblis' entire family. (TFNR)

Grasp
this is the modified SkySlayer assault ship owned by Teehl. She added twin custom engines to increase its sublight speed. (SH)

Grass Fly
this insect is known for its loud buzz. (GOF3)

Grass Hutt, The
this was one of the ritziest flangth-houses on the planet Ord Mantell, during the height of the New Order. (SWJ14)

Grass Painting
an art form that originated on the planet Alderaan, grass painting involved the managed growth of various species of grass. When properly planted and maintained, over the years the natural colors and textures of the grasses form a beautiful artwork when viewed from the air. The art of grass painting also involves a knowledge of soil characteristics, meteorology, and horticulture, in addition to an eye for color and the ability to create on such a grand scale. (ISU)

Grasser
this flesh of this creature is considered something of a delicacy, at least on many backwater worlds. (SWO)

Grasser
this species of large herdbeast was raised by the Korunnai natives of Haruun Kal. They used trained akk dogs to keep the huge grassers in their herds. Grassers had coats of silky fur that helped them maintain their body heat, and they moved about on six powerful legs. The four frontmost legs were used to pull up vegetation and shove it into the grasser's huge mouth. The head of the grasser was dominated by three large eyes, which gave the grasser the ability to look left, right, and up in search of food or predators. The name grasser was given to these creatures by the native Korunnai, who observed that the grasser left behind a meadow-like swath as they moved through jungles, consuming all plantlife in their path. The Korunnai learned to follow the grasser herds to safety during the winters, when Downstorms were prevalent. It was for this reason that grasser herds were protected by the Korunnai and their trained akk dogs. (ETM, SHPT)

Grasstrekkers
this was a group of militant beings who roamed the Forest Moon of Endor, wreaking havoc wherever they traveled. The Grasstrekkers once tried to take over the fortress of the Gupin people, forcing Punt to give them the key to the Guniepal Chest in the hopes of rendering the Gupins helpless. The two Gupin brothers, Rin-Rin and Oobel, enlisted the aid of the Ewoks Wicket, Teebo, and Kneesaa, to retake the key from the Grasstrekkers and reclaim the Gupin fortress. (ECAR)

Grastes
this toxic, rocky world was the second planet of the Axum System, located in the Core Worlds. It was orbited by a single moon. (CCW)

Grate Toad
this disgusting amphibian was native to the undercity of Coruscant. (YDR)

Grath
an Imperial Army Commander, serving over General Irrv on Culroon III. Grath executed Irrv for not seeing the Culroon charade of submission; the Culroon attacked and killed a great many Imperial troops before Lieutenant Veers disobeyed Irrv and routed the Culroon with AT-AT assault vehicles. Grath
this young Vorzydiak was the son of Chairman Port and his wife, Bryn, born more than ten years before the Battle of Naboo. Grath was one of the original founders of the Freelies, along with his friend Flip. When Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi were dispatched to Vorzyd 4 to mediate the dispute between Port and Felana, his counterpart on Vorzyd 5, Obi-Wan discovered that it was the Freelies who were behind the acts of sabotage that were affected production on Vorzyd 4. Grath and the Freelies chafed at the constant drive to work which was part of the Vorzydiak culture, and wanted to obtain more free time for "fun." Grath was one of the loudest voices among the Freelies with respect to ensuring that their sabotage did not injure anyone, a stance which grated on Flip and his friend, Tray. When Flip altered the plans to bomb the Multycorp, in order to catch the adults as they were entering the building, Grath and Obi-Wan tried to warn everyone. Most of the Vorzydiaks managed to escape, but Flip was caught in the blast. In the wake of Flip's death, Grath and the Freelies agreed to work with Chairman Port to reschedule worktime and downtime to better accommodate free time for the Vorzydiaks. (TTW)

this antiques dealer was a native of the planet Hargeeva. He maintained a shop in Arginall City, where he worked with Stevan Makintay and the resistance there. Grathal also helped Mak set up many a rendezvous with Ketrian Altronel. (SWJ8)

this phrase was part of a traditional Mandalorian war chant that became the anthem of the various clones produced for the Grand Army of the Republic. It meant something along the lines of "Our vegneance burns brighter still," and was sung to boost a team's morale. (RCHC)

Grau, Wil'm
the Imperial Major in charge of the detachment sent to the planet Alashan, Grau and his elite team captured Luke Skywalker after the Staraker crashed on the planet shortly after the Battle of Yavin. A rotund man with a well-trimmed beard, Grau served the Empire as a commando during his early career. When he realized that he had captured Luke, as well as Leia Organa, Grau ordered his men to keep them alive. Despite the obvious notoriety to be gained from capturing the Alliance heroes, Grau knew that he wasn't going to get off Alashan without their help. He offered them a truce, so that they could work together and figure out what was going on. When Luke and Leia rescued Grau from an avalanche, he gladly accepted their comradeship, and returned their weapons in hopes of affecting better protection for the group. After surviving the mission to Alashan, Grau and his second-in-command, Sergeant Anarine, were invited to join the Alliance. Both respectfully declined, and returned to the Empire instead.
