From the team that brought you last year’s “Star Wars: C-3PO Does Not Like Sand!”, comes another great installment in the fun new Droid Tales picture book series, “Star Wars: R2-D2 is Lost!” That’s right, written by Caitlin Kennedy and illustrated by Brian Kesinger, this latest installment finds our favorite Star Wars droids in familiar territory and in familiar company!
From the publisher…
The droids are in for an Endor-able adventure! While C-3PO is pleased to once again be treated like a god by the Ewoks, and BB-8 is curious about his new furry companions, R2-D2 finds himself in a wilderness experience gone wrong when he comes across a small Ewok in need of help.
After finally dusting off all Tatooine’s sand, C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8 find themselves on another familiar planet, the Forest Moon of Endor! It isn’t long before they are greeted by the Sanctuary Moon's most famous residents, the Ewoks!
Now, it’s unclear why the trio has gone to Endor in the first place but Threepio unabashedly enjoys the God-complex he gets whenever he’s around his furry friends. It isn’t long before Artoo gets tired of the routine and rolls off looking for something better to do, other than bask in Threepio’s glory.
It’s here he comes across an upset Ewok child who has been separated from his tribe and can’t find his way back to the village. Artoo jumps into action and does his best to get the little fella home, despite a broken scanner, and they go on a bit of an adventure!
In a bit of a role reversal, Artoo gets a taste of his own medicine trying to keep up with the Ewok child who seems to excel at getting into trouble. Here’s hoping he finds his way back with a little more appreciation for how Threepio feels most of the time.
The book is full of sweet moments as the battle-hardened droid learns the hardship of being a parent, and what it’s like having to provide for a little one. Indeed, by the end of their journey, Artoo looks like he’s been through hell while the child seems ready for another adventure!
By design of course, the 64-page picture book is aesthetically identical in almost every way to its predecessor, “C-3PO Does Not Like Sand!” This satisfies my OCD by looking great on the shelf next to one another and I look forward to more editions.
Brian’s illustrations have always had a real Calvin & Hobbs sensibility and I’m totally here for that. In fact, I think his style shines more in this book than the last and I suspect it has something to do with the warm colours and furry citizens of Endor.
Caitlin can do no wrong in my view and once again strikes the right tone with her empathetic and gentle words. She’s become a go-to for Disney Books, amassing a good library in a short period of time, and I’m glad for that.
This is an ages 6-8 book, but I have no doubt you could stretch that demographic in either direction by a year or even two and still get happy results.
Published by Disney Books, “Star Wars R2-D2 is Lost!” is available on Tuesday, February 11th. You can pre-order a copy HERE!
