The Alliance Military Structure

Structure

The Alliance military is separated into two distinct forces: the Alliance Forces and the Sector Forces. Both are under the control of the High Command.

The Alliance Forces: The part of the military under the direct control of the High Command. It includes the Fleet and attached starfighter wings, most major support services, and a small but powerful ground forces unit.

The Sector Forces: Semi-autonomous military units charged with keeping the fight alive in their particular sectors.

High Command

Alliance High Command is the mind of the Alliance military. It is the tool through which Mon Mothma directs the war effort, and, as such, closely reflects her beliefs about command and control. The diagram below describes the structure of High Command.

Commander-in-Chief

Mon Mothma currently hold the title of Commander-in-Chief. This title is automatically given to whomever is Chief of State. The highest ranking officer in the Alliance Forces. Mon Mothma describes her position as "more like a chairman of the board than a soldier."

Chief of Staff

Second in command to the Commander-in-Chief. Acts as a filter for the C-in-C, deciding what problems require her attention and what problems can be resolved at a lower level. Empowered to act in the C-in-C's name, when pressing political buisiness takes her away from command of the military.

Supreme Allied Commanders

These are the chiefs of the various departments of the Alliance war machine.

Fleet Command: The single most important component of the Allied Forces.

Ordnance and Supply: Responsible for procuring the equipment, weaponry, and foodstuffs for the Allied Forces.

Starfighter Command: Charged with strategic control of the Alliances' starfighter contingent. Currently under the command of General Jan Dodonna.

Support Services: Controls the Alliance's limited transportation network: bulk and light freighters and other vessels.

Intelligence: Responsible for keeping track of the Imperial Army and Navy. Intell's undercover operatives are anywhere that military information can be found.

Special Forces: These are the ground troops of the Allied Forces.

Sector Command: In charge of the various Sector Forces, assigning assets, coordinating activities between sectors, and the like. For an example of a "typical" Sector Force, see Atrivis Sector Forces.

High Command Base

While the Alliance has several bases troughout the galaxy, High Command keeps one central base, which houses both the Civil and Military governments. Along with the Fleet, HC Base is one of the two cornerstones of the Rebellion. The first base was on a small planetoid in the Chrellis system, but had to be abandoned recently when the Empire moved one of its Sector Fleets uncomfortably close to that area - an unfortunate coincidence. The current location of HC Base is unknown to the heroes.
