Twenty years ago today The Phantom Menace trailer hit television and theaters. It was our first glimpse at any footage of the upcoming Star Wars prequel. I remember recording it on my VCR as Entertainment Tonight hyped it only to show it at the very end of their program. I watched that VCR recording at least 50 times, each time finding something new it seemed.
It also ran in front of a film featuring Brad Pitt titled "Meet Joe Black". Reports came in that theaters were filling up for the feature only to empty out after The Phantom Menace trailer had screened. Online, there was no YouTube service, and to download it would take forever on your 56k modem. However, fans took to internet forums and chat rooms to express their love or hate of the film before even seeing it. I liked it then and can say it still gives me those goosebumps I got 20 years ago.
