Lucasfilm Unveils Massive Mural For Star Wars Celebration 2019
For this year's Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy wanted something special, something that encapsulated the entire Star Wars Saga, from start to finish. She approached legendary Star Wars artist and current Lucasfilm Vice President and Executive Creative Director Doug Chiang with the idea and the mural was born!
The final product is 10-feet-tall and 88-feet-long, will feature every Star Wars movie, including Episode IX. Additionally, to the delight of many, it will include the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated series, with each show given its own segment and equal footing. In other words, the animated side of Star Wars will be shown right alongside films such as Star Wars: A New Hope, illustrating Star Wars as one large story.
This was tricky for Chiang and Palmer as it also meant balancing the figures in each section, from size to aesthetic — including those from animation. To bring the animated characters to life in a realistic sense, Palmer turned to the fans for inspiration and scale, in particular cosplayers. “It’s just easier if you have someone with a perfect costume posing for you." says Palmer.
Above is just the original trilogy section of the mural and you can already see the incredible detail and care put into this massive piece of art. The project took only six weeks and will find it's way to Chicago in time for the start of Celebration.
