And They're Off: Episode VII Began Filming In Abu Dhabi
The Hollywood Reporter has posted a new story confirming that Abu Dhabi is the first shooting location for Episode VII.
"Sources tell THR that the J.J. Abrams-led production is seeking to re-create the desert planet Tatooine," the story reads. That would track with previous rumors we've heard about the Abu Dhabi set hosting a large market setting, as well as the brief bit of scenery that was visible in J.J. Abrams' latest video.
Lucasfilm is working with local company twofour54 in Abu Dhabi. A press release from the company adds that "Hundreds of local and international cast and crew are currently working on the production in Abu Dhabi with key production staff working closely with twofour54 intaj since January."
A story from Variety suggests that Abu Dhabi was chosen because of an attractive motion picture production rebate.
"We were very excited to start the filming of Star Wars: Episode VII in Abu Dhabi," said Kathleen Kennedy. "it has been an incredible place to commence this journey."
