Star Wars Is Everywhere: Episode XXXII

Posted By Mike on March 2, 2011

Once again, we're all over the place as far as our latest edition of Star Wars is Everywhere. Enjoy the randomness...

Last week's episode of Chuck ("Chuck vs. the Masquerade") featured the use of 12" Han and Chewie figures as a metaphor for Chuck and his best friend/roommate Morgan, who was moving out. I'd give you the exact time when the references occured but they were scattered throughout the episode and of course included Morgan's Star Wars bedsheets. Click here to catch the episode over at HULU.

Last night's episode of No Ordinary Family also included a short Star Wars reference. Teenage Daphne, who can read minds, sarcastically remarks on her Jedi-like abilities when her boyfriend starts to get suspicious.

At approximately the 10:45 mark:

"Right. You found me out. I'm really a Jedi Master"

As for other pop culture TV references over the past couple of weeks, make sure to check out the 2-25-11 episode of the ForceCast which includes references from The Simpsons, Glee, 30 Rock, Carrie Fisher on Oprah and more.

So apparently Oscar winner Natalie Portman cries a heck of a lot in her films and this video over at Italian site repubblica.it provides a nice montage of waterworks.
(Thanks Achim!)

The latest biography video from WatchMojo.com centers on the one and only George Lucas. Titled "From Star Wars to Indiana Jones", the video might not have new info to die-hard Star Wars fans, but it's only 4 minutes long and displays some behind-the-scenes footage. Enjoy!

In honor of the 2011 Academy Awards, Mack Rawden at CinemaBlend.com compares The Social Network to Star Wars and Annie Hall...

"There is a fundamental problem at the core of the Academy Awards. It?s not really talked about often, but it?s none the less ever-present. There is a disconnect between entertainment and greatness. For the purposes of this article, let?s call it the 1977 predicament because that?s the clearest and most relatable example. At that particular Oscar ceremony, the Best Picture race featured Annie Hall going up against Star Wars. There were, of course, three other candidates, but let?s just ignore them and hone in on these two. Annie Hall was the critic?s darling. Experimental and smart, it redefined the rules for romantic comedies. It broke the fourth wall. It featured cameos, brilliant acting performances and grand social commentaries on the two most famous American cities. Conversely, Star Wars was every bit as straight forward as Annie Hall was subtle. It was grandiose, maybe a bit clich?d and a whole lot of fun. Of course Woody Allen?s film took home the Oscar, and to this day, it?s still talked about and played on movie channels the world over, but it doesn?t compare to the phenomenon that is Star Wars."

10 year old UK Star Wars fan Connor Hagan was lucky enough to recieve a personalized letter from George Lucas along with some posters after he had sent The Maker some artwork over a year ago. Lucky Connor! And good for him for "going for it" by sending George his creations. You can read more about it at MaghullStar.co.uk.

BucksFreePress.co.uk reports on Sio Bibble actor Oliver Ford Davies' new stage role in Goodnight Mister Tom. While we wish him well in his new role, we're also happy that he touched on Star Wars within the article...

"He said: ?I even had a scene with a 12-year-old Keira Knightley who played one of the Queen's doubles. You could never be sure who was Natalie Portman.

?They didn't explain very clearly to me that we would rehearse with a lot of extras playing the droids and then when we came to the actual take they weren't there but we have to leave room to put in CGI. You would get a very earnest American come up to me and say. 'You didn't leave quite enough room.' It was like being 8-years-old again. I was hustled away but no-one was hustling you away. So you had to hustle yourself away, like an 8-year-old.?'

MiamiHerald.com highlights a number of teachers who are up for the Teacher of the Year honor in the Miami-Dade area. How does this pertain to Star Wars? Nominee Barbara Quinaz uses Vader and Yoda in her high school English class.

Continuing with the education theme, EdWeek.org highlights "What 'Star Wars' Can Teach Educators About Parent Engagement."

TFN reader Tony was nice enough to send over this SWIE-related e-mail:

"I came across this article about Star Wars... at a Kiss website, of all places!

It was an enjoyable read that recalled many fond memories of growing up in the late '70s, when these two things (and Charlie's Angels) ruled my life. There's even a great photo of a Stormtrooper helmet with Gene Simmons makeup on it!

Anyway, just thought it might be something my fellow TFN readers would find of interest."

Definitely of interest. Thanks Tony!

LaserCola.com goes in defense of the Prequels by listing ten highlights from the trilogy.

An article from The Expositor compares Star Wars with 18th century "Opera Wars." Excerpt below and full article right here.

"The 18th-century equivalent of Star Wars--that's what people in London thought exactly 300 years ago when they saw Handel's first opera being performed.

Well, back then people didn't yet know what George Lucas was going to do of course, but Star Wars is a pretty decent equivalent to what happened in London's opera house at the end of February 1711. Not only was it the first opera from this world-famous genius their king had just invited to his court, but it was the first Italian-language opera written for the London stage. And the manager of that house was all set to show Londoners all of the very latest tricks his stage machinery could play on them."

Winterport, Maine Star Wars collector Chris Beckwith recieved some press from both WABI TV 5 and KPLC 7.
