Star Wars Is Everywhere: Episode XLIV

Posted By Mike on June 26, 2011

Star Wars is Everywhere returns with a mixed bag that includes Miss USA taking a Star Wars quiz, a Jedi on Wipeout, J.J. Abrams talking The Wars and much more. And for all-around George Lucas fans, make sure to scan to the bottom for news on the recent release of American Graffiti on Blu-Ray.

GolfChannel.com compares PGA stars Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to Vader and Luke...

"Right or wrong, the on course cursing, spitting and the fall out after hitting a hydrant has Tiger Woods looking like Darth Vader. He just needs Nike to make him a black mask that makes that weird breathing noise.

Playing the part of Luke Skywalker, 22-year-old Rory McIlroy. A well-liked talent with boyish charm. The force is strong with this one. He even has his own Obe-Wan Kenobi in Jack Nicklaus who offered advice on how to handle the spotlight."

Our friend Erich of the New England Garrison of the 501st sent over the following report from a June 19th event in Vermont.

"On Sunday, June 19th, members of the New England Garrison headed up to Shelburne, Vermont, for a Star Wars Day, celebrating the release of an upcoming book with the Flying Pig Bookstore. Marked with a prominent STAR WARS EVENT sign, troopers arrived at the event space and suited up, while a crowd gathered in the town gym to wait. As two stormtroopers, a snow trooper and a clone trooper entered the room, the crowd had a collective intake of breath, and quickly lined up to take pictures. The first four troopers were soon joined by Darth Vader, escorted by a Biker Scout, and those who had lined up for pictures quickly rejoined the line for more.

Store owners Josie and Elizabeth were thrilled at our presence:

'The children were often in costume and bravado quickly turned to hiding behind daddy?s leg when full-sized characters came out. Some kids were dressed and ready to meet their heroes without fear. Little Darth Vaders came in several sizes...The 501st [Legion] did a wonderful job and the event was a smashing success.'

After holding the line for pictures for almost an hour, as the 175 or so participants waited for pictures, the troopers dispersed around the room to meet fans, and took turns going out by the road to wave at traffic. A number of children had dressed as their favorite characters, and the awe from the crowd was palpable. By the end of the day, the event had received around $300 in donations for the Stern Center for Language and Learning in Burlington, VT.

If you're in the New England area and are interested in joining the 501st Legion at one of their many events, please visit http://www.501neg.com."

Thanks Erich! If you'd like to read more about the event, there's a write-up with pictures at Publisher's Weekly as well.

While promoting his new film Super 8, writer/director/producer J.J. Abrams couldn't help but talk The Wars in a nice interview with The Sydney Morning Herald.

"When it comes to his many influences, Abrams traces his yearnings to make films back to the advent of Star Wars in 1977. The last time he saw it was only a few months ago, and he can't wait to see it again in September when it comes out on Blu-Ray.

"The thing about Star Wars is that it is just the most spectacular combination of the everyman going through the extraordinary adventure," Abrams gushes. "Despite taking place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, when you meet Luke Skywalker he's the classic hero. The idea that his he and his life intersect with the rebellion and those droids and Obi Wan and Darth Vader - it's mind-blowingly, beautifully inventive.

"That Lucas started Star Wars by calling it No 4 is off-the-charts brilliant. He threw you into the middle of this spectacular universe; it was the sheer boldness with which he approached that movie.

"The whole thing just smacked of why I wanted to make movies; it was transportive, it was the ultimate magic trick - and it was funny, too. It has a wonderful humour and humanity, and to pull off that combination where you're feeling emotional, you're feeling the adventure, you're feeling the comedy - your jaws open from the sheer spectacle of it. Star Wars was just an incredible combination of action, adventure, humanity, comedy and pathos. You couldn't have done better."'

(Thanks Jimmy!)

Our friend Justin caught a little Star Wars on Wipeout...

"Tonight was the season premiere of the game show "Wipeout Summer" on ABC. The episode pitted the "Hotties vs. Nerds" contestants, and one of the nerds was clothed in Jedi robes.

Sadly, the Force wasn't with him, and he didn't advance far enough to win the $50,000 prize.

Here's two pics of him before he started his run."

And in the George Lucas is Everywhere category, our friend Shane sent over the following American Graffiti news.

"I know it's not Star Wars but we do love all things George, so I thought this might interest some people. American Graffiti was released on Blu Ray May 31st and is available at Amazon and where all good Blu Rays are sold.

Here is the blu-ray.com listing with reviews, screenshots and ratings etc."

(Thanks Shane!)
