Star Wars Is Everywhere: Episode LX

Posted By Mike on November 2, 2011

Star Wars and science X 2, more from Man Up and Life's Too Short, ILM, the Cincinnati Bengals, Boba Fett collecting, Lettuce performs the Imperial March in costume, we see the softer side of Vader, and more!

The Huffington Post reports that NASA is officially working on tractor beam technology:

"The term "tractor beam" may conjure images of a giant laser pulling Han Solo's Millenium Falcon into the Death Star in 1977's "A New Hope".

But these days, tractor beam technology isn't limited to Star Wars.

NASA announced on Monday that it had awarded three scientists $100,000 to study the use of light beams to gather atmospheric or planetary particles, like molecules, cells and viruses, for analysis. Or, simply put, to study tractor beams."

Our friend Al sends word that Star Wars is going to college in South Carolina...

"I wanted to share the good news. This coming spring, I will be teaching a Star Wars course at Newberry College, in Newberry, SC. As a life-long Star Wars fan and member of both the 501st and Rebel Legions, I have dreamed about this for a long time. The time has finally come! The course will be a 3 credit class featuring the Star Wars saga through the media and pop culture. We will be screening all six feature films as well as many other Star Wars media that have come to us over the years. Feedback is already very positive and the class is rumored to be full on the first day of registration!"

Congrats to Al! We wish he and his students a productive spring semester and we greatly appreciate what Al is doing to spread the word of Star Wars.

I'd gladly start my morning with the Star Wars coffee set designed by graphic designer Eric Beatty.

CincyJungle.com compares members of the Cincinnati Bengals organization to characters (and a vehicle) in the Star Wars universe.

We've posted a couple times on Star Wars references within the new ABC comedy Man Up, which co-stars Dan Fogler of Fanboys. Star Wars was central to the plot on one of the most recent episodes and Billy Dee Williams is scheduled to appear in the seventh episode of the season. Zap2it.com got a chance to chat with the show's creator Christopher Moynihan about the evolution of the modern man and much of the discussion centered around Star Wars. Check out an excerpt:

"To guy-dom, 'Star Wars' is very important," Moynihan says. "For the guys who were born when we were born, and you're in your 30s, you were born right at that time when it was so influential. Nothing was more exciting in my childhood than going to see 'Empire Strikes Back.' I was 7 years old and it just burns into your psyche. For guys our age, it is.

In doing a show about these men, you have to make a nod to the fact that their lives were informed by those movies. Especially the character of Kenny [Dan Fogler]. We set out to do [last week's] episode about these two characters having to become friends and it was like, what was the most important thing to Kenny. And it would be 'Star Wars.' ... There was a little nod to all the things Lucas has added to it over the years, that true diehard fans like Kenny would be reluctant to embrace, so he watches in its 'purest form,' the way it was meant to be seen ... on Betamax."
