This is a guest post written by TFN reader Tim Schaffer.
In Season 5 Episode 10 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, "Secret Weapons," we were introduced to a character named Colonel Meebur Gascon.
There was talk that this character was a Glurgg and originally introduced in the game "Galactic Battlegrounds" and based on an unused concept for the Gungans by Terryl Whitlatch back in 1994. However, the official Star Wars site stated that he's NOT a Glurrg, but a new species called Zilkin. However, it is still apparent that he was derived from an unused concept for the Gungans by Terryl Whitlatch, and introduced in the book The Making of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
Introducing this character is another prime example how Lucasfilm loves to rehash characters. I guess you could call Colonel Gascon a cousin of Jar Jar Binks.
What is even cooler is that there is an awesome, rare, 12" Resin model of this figure, originally named "Worrywart," sculpted by Matt Hawkins and made by Cygenus Studios.
I was lucky enough to buy one of these models years ago, not even knowing what it was at the time. I named him ?Arnie." I showed the model to my fellow Star Wars fanatic friend and he told me he had seen that creature before, and low and behold, it was the Gungan prototype drawn by Terryl Whitlatch.
So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw "Arnie" appearing on the TV right before my eyes as Colonel Gascon. That was a real piece of Star Wars collecting eye candy if I?ve ever seen one.
I wonder what else good ol' Lucasfilm, or should I say "Disney," will pull out of the drawing board next.
