eBay Today: Screen Used Prop Or Overpriced Replica?
Posted By D. Martin on May 7, 2012
My personal experience working in the properties department in feature films tells me that there is no aboveboard way for an onset medic (who is almost always the craft service person as well) would ever be given a prop mask during a film's production, but that doesn't mean someone -including a member of the props department- didn't steal it and give it to the guy mentioned. That said, most films have set sales shortly after principal photography that do include the sale screen used props but this usually doesn't include in house builds or hero props. The in house pieces and rather unique items are put into hot stock and ultimately end up in a Raiders Of The Lost Ark style warehouse.
What's more LFL always seemed to do what they could to hold onto these in house created items for archival purposes. The long and short of it? This is an auction worth checking out, but we'd recommend a bit of caution for those that are looking to bid. It never hurts to ask a lot of questions before committing to a purchase. After all it isn't completely inconceivable that it could be the real deal, but even if it is, it certainly isn't worth $65,000.
