I (Jeff) am finally back from Gen Con 2001 that was held in Milwaukee. The event had substancially less Star Wars materialthan last year, but that's understandable since last year was the release of the brand new RPG. This year the big event was the release of the excellent Dark Side Sourcebook.
Wizards of the Coast held two seminars on the RPG Saturday. The first one was called "Coming Soon for the Star Wars RPG". Bill Slavicsek, JD Wiker and former Star Wars Gamer editor-in-chief and now Creative Director Chris Perkins revealed upcoming products and content by presenting a slide show. Highlights were:
4 new prestige classes (including Navy Officer and Force Pilot)
Deckplan section
New feats (including Force piloting)
New character archetypes
A lot of new starships
New Jedi Order Sourcebook
Information about Yuuzhan Vong and their alien technology
New prestige classes (including Jedi Ace and Noghri Bodyguard)
Stats for 50+ characters
Available 2/11/2002
Tempest Feud
Huge campaign in three parts that takes characters from level 4 to 11
Guide to Hutt Space
New equipment (including Hutt battle armor)
Available 3/11/2002
Other planned products:
An Episode Sourcebook
Light Side Sourcebook
Arms & Equipment Guide
Gamer #6 will be about bounty hunters, including stats for Dengar, Zuckuss & 4-LOM (the cover was also shown)
Gamer #7 will have articles about life on the fringe, Secrets of Mos Eisley, Vehicle Ace prestige class, and Tusken Raiders
Gamer #8 will have articles about the New Jedi Order, Yuuzhan Vong heroes, and Mercenary prestige class
Gamer #9 will have material on Jedi, including Secrets of the Jedi Academy, ships of the New Republic, Jedi Duelist prestige class, Battlemasters, and Secrets of Mon Calamari
The second seminar held in the same room was "The Dark Side Revealed", where co-authors Slavicsek and Wiker commented on writing the book and answered a lot of questions from fans.
Other events were the Star Wars Connections seminar, hosted by LFL's Steve Sansweet. It was on Friday and Saturday. Steve showed the audience the first two episodes of Making Episode II on a big screen, as well as an exlusive report clip (that had some footage from the interview on the recent re-release of the classic trilogy on tape) and to top it all of, a montage of never-before-seen clips from behind the scenes of the new movie! Steve also answered a lot of questions from fans, in his usual friendly and humorous manner.
Actor and writer Billy Dee Williams was also attending for signing autographs. I didn't get to meet him but a friend who was with me did. Convention favorites Michonne Bourriague (Aurra Sing) and Shannon Baksa (Mara Jade) also were signing, and authors Michael A. Stackpole and Timothy Zahn were signing at the Decipher booth (I got an exclusive Talon Karrde&Corran Horn&Mara Jade card signed by all three!) R.A. Salvatore was also there and Aaron Allston was lurking around...
I also got a chance to demo the new Jedi Knights TCG and see all the new Coruscant cards (available in stores on Wednesday) at the Decipher Booth. The WotC Castle had the Star Wars Delve, a kind of miniatures set-up but with action figures. It played with the SW Adventure Game rules.
All that and meeting some friends from the Lucasfilm and the SWFA, and I had a fun week-end. For more information, go on WotC's Virtual Gen Con page.
