E3: Coverage Of SW: The Old Republic

Posted By Mike on June 6, 2011

Dr. Greg Zeschuk just presented Star Wars: The Old Republic in the currently ongoing EA press conference at E3. He noted that an "army" of the best artists, producers, talent, etc. have been working on the game to bring a passioned and demanding fan base the game they deserve. During E3, we're going to get details and video displaying raids, Tatooine, boss battles and more.

But most of that will have to wait until later in the week as the focus for The Old Republic today is a new cinematic video titled, "Return." It's already online at SWTOR.com who present the following written intro...

"Protected by the legendary Jedi Order, the Galactic Republic stood as a bastion of peace in the galaxy for a thousand generations. Several centuries ago, the greatest threat the galaxy has ever known emerged in the form of the dark Sith Empire. After a volatile war, the Republic emerged victorious and the Sith were assumed to be extinct. Nonetheless, the Jedi have maintained a constant vigil over the ancient Sith homeworld, to protect the galaxy from the darkness that still resides in the planet?s tombs."

Keep checking back with TFN and we'll be sure to keep you updated with new video and information as it becomes available.

UPDATE: And if you'd like to watch the video here...

UPDATE #2: It should be noted that the cinematic intro video titled "Return" is not what was displayed during the EA press conference. What appeared there was more of a trailer-style montage with what looked to be a mixture of all 3 TOR cinematic videos and then some. It had very cool narration that was back and forth between Jedi Knight Satele Shan and presumably Darth Malgus. It was a nice promo video and hopefully we'll get to display that for you in due time. Just wanted to make sure there was no confusion. I've edited the post above a bit to make it all jive.

UPDATE #3: First up, here's the aforementioned video that was displayed during the EA press conference via Massively:

And for a little light reading, VentureBeat.com gets hands on with TOR cooperative play.

UPDATE #4: E3 2011 continues and we have a number of TOR-related links and tibits with which to catch you up this fine morning.

As Curto reported yesterday, Razer is bringing licensed TOR computer peripherals to the marketplace with offerings that include keyboards, headsets, mice, and mouse pads. Starwars.com now has an official announement with product details, images and specs.

The following sites have some new hands-on previews of Star Wars The Old Republic:

EA.com - video of yesterday's live broadcast and Q&A with lead writer Daniel Erickson, screenshots and a round-up of TOR trailers and gameplay videos
Massively - screenshots and a video preview of Alderaan with Daniel Erickson, which also includes a Q&A (from yesterday's live broadcast)
IGN - write-up states that the engaging story is what will lure non-MMO fans
TomsHardware.com - short write-up
Gamespot.com - write-up on a Tatooine level, screenshots, and the video below featuring lead writer Daniel Erickson with a preview of Alderaan

Remember to keep checking back with this post. We'll continue to update as E3 2011 forges ahead.

UPDATE #5: Wired.com gets hands-on with TOR as well as provides the video below with Daniel Erickson. Note that at the end of the video, Daniel still refers to a late 2011 release date despite recent rumors of further delays.
