Greenpeace Uses SW To Challenge VW

Posted By Mike on June 28, 2011

Greenpeace is not a huge fan of Volkswagen since the automobile company is against proposed cuts to carbon-dioxide emissions. So how does Greenpeace display its displeasure? They've created a parody of Volkswagen's ever so popular mini-Vader Super Bowl commercial. Check it out below!

UPDATE: So I just realized we had an e-mail from Greenpeace in the old TFN inbox that explains the video campaign in a bit more detail...

"Early this morning Greenpeace launched a new global campaign to turn Volkswagen away from the Dark Side.

Volkswagen?s current advert which features a mini Darth Vader, has racked up over 40 million You Tube views after being launched in the half-time ad break during this year?s Super Bowl. It recently won a prestigious Gloden Lion award at Cannes. Now, to highlight VW?s poor environmental record, Greenpeace has spoofed the ad using a cast of young Star Wars fans, and a team including top names from the advertising world, Oscar and international award-winning filmmakers, and Hollywood special effects experts.

The spoof film can be viewed at http://VWdarkside.com

The launch of the spoof ? in which other young Star Wars characters challenge VW?s mini Vader while a VW-branded Death Star threatens the earth ? comes on the same day that Greenpeace unveils billboards at two of London?s most prestigious advertising sites. Specialist activist climbers this morning installed spoof ads at London?s largest advertising space at Old Street where the adverts can now be seen on 4 hoardings. Meanwhile, activists dressed as stormtroopers are protesting outside the company's UK HQ in Milton Keynes.

The new global campaign represents a major new push against Europe's largest car manufacturer. Across more than fourteen countries including China, Canada, US, Uk, Germany and France, Greenpeace are highlighting key failures by Volkswagen to live up to the company's carefully crafted reputation as a family-friendly and environmentally responsible car manufacturer. A new Greenpeace report released today details how Volkswagen is using its huge political muscle to lobby against key environmental laws. Despite claiming it wants to be "the most eco-friendly car automaker in the world", VW has also failed to make more efficient and fuel saving cars standard across its fleet - moves that would help the planet and reduce fuel costs for consumers."

Thanks Sara!
