In a way, the answer is obvious: Darth Krayt is the ultimate antagonist in the Star Wars: Legacy comic series; he?s the new Sith Lord who has conquered the Galaxy at the head of a reborn Empire, a century after Return of the Jedi.
But Lord Krayt wasn?t always a ruthless tyrant bestriding the Galaxy. What shaped him as a Dark Lord of the Sith? Where did he originally come from? Thus far, we?ve only been given a few tantalizing hints, but next month, in Legacy?s issue 15, Darth Krayt?s origins will be revealed.
In anticipation of this event, over the next seven days, TheForce.Net will bring you an in-depth guide to the mystery of Darth Krayt: a seven-part summary of what we can work out about him from the story so far, and an analysis of some of the suggestions fans have made about his identity.
First things first, though. Since the beginning of the series, there has been a very clear message from the Star Wars: Legacy creative team ? writer John Ostrander, artist Jan Duursema, and editor Randy Stradley: who Darth Krayt might once have been is less important than why he is who he is now.
Taken at face value, this could mean that his origins are unimportant, perhaps even uninteresting: rather than bald facts about birth and biography, it?s the Sith Lord he?s become that?s what matters.
On the other hand, this statement could be just as true if Krayt?s previous identity is significant. If the transformative experiences that redefined him as Darth Krayt are the most important part of the story, then they might become all the more significant if they involved the destruction and remaking of an already-important Star Wars character.
So, what do we think we know? More on that tomorrow....
In the mean time, there?s an active discussion thread on Krayt?s identity on TF.N?s message-boards.
