Marvel Return of the Jedi #3
Mission to Endor
Published: December 1983
Story: ARCHIE GOODWIN
Art: AL WILLIAMSON and CARLOS GARZON with RON FRENZ and TOM PALMER
Summary

As the Reebel fleet, including Home One, an MC80a Calamari Cruiser, amasses near Sullust, a meeting begins aboard Headquarters Frigate, a Nebulon-B ship. Mon Mothma, a Chandrillan, shows the Bothan tapes of the Death Star, then Admiral Ackbar, a Mon Calamari, and General Crix Madine, a Corellian, explain the mission. Lando, now a General for his maneuvers in the Battle of Tanaab, will lead an attack after Han's strike team disables the shield generator on Endor's moon. Leia, Chewie, and Luke volunteer for the latter. Leia senses something in Luke, but he postpones telling her. Han gives Lando the Falcon for his mission, then takes Tyderium, a Lambda-class shuttle, to Sanctuary Moon. Nearing Executor and the Death Star, Han gives stolen codes. Luke senses Vader and realizes he's endangering the mission, and Vader senses him as well. At Jhoff's station, Piett offers to hold them, but Vader lets them pass. At Sanctuary Moon, they head for the shield bunker, but Han attracts attention from nearby troops, blowing the surprise. As he and Chewie fight the troops, Leia and Luke pursue fleeing Aratech 74-Z speeder bikes. Two more bikes give chase, but Luke brakes and opens fire. Throwing one from a bike, he pursues the other until being thrown himself. The other returns to kill him, but he disables it with his 'saber and returns on foot. Vader senses Luke and is sent to find him. Luke, Han, Chewie, and the droids search for Leia, finding speeder parts and her hat. Chewie sees a dead animal and grabs it, springing a trap that ensnares them in a net. Luke cuts them out, but they are surrounded by cute, bear-like Ewoks who think 3PO a god but will not heed his request to free them. Teebo, Paploo, and others tie them up and carry them to their home, Bright Tree Village. Logray, a Medicine Man, orders a feast in 3PO's honor, with them as the main course. Leia, having befriended an Ewok named Wicket W. Warrick, pleads on their behalf, but Logray refuses until Luke uses the Force to spin 3PO in the air. The scared Ewoks free them, and R2 shocks Teebo in spite. In Chief Chirpa's hut, 3PO later recounts the war, complete with sound effects. Chirpa makes them tribesmen and a party ensues. Luke wanders off, Leia follows, and he tells of their relationship, claiming he must surrender to find the good in Vader. The next morning, an AT-AT deposits Luke and Major Lesim's troops at a landing pad, where Vader awaits. As they walk to his ship, Luke tries to reach the Anakin within him. However, Vader plans to give him to the Emperor, and Luke dejectedly decides that his father is truly dead. EnsViews Comic Review
