Marvel Return of the Jedi #1
In the Hands of Jabba the Hutt
Published: October 1983
Story: ARCHIE GOODWIN
Art: AL WILLIAMSON and CARLOS GARZON with RON FRENZ and TOM PALMER
Summary

Han's friends plan to free him, as the Rebel fleet prepares to attack the Empire. At Endor's Sanctuary Moon, the Executor sends ST-321, a Lambda-class shuttle, to a new, half-built Death Star, using Code Clearance Blue to signal Vader's arrival. Vader chastises Moff Jerjerrod for being behind schedule and says Palpatine is en route. In Tatooine's Dune Sea, R2 and 3PO approach the citadel of Jabba the Hutt, former home of the B'omarr Monks, to deliver a message from Luke. 3PO is worried, for Lando and Chewie never returned from here. A security post at the door questions them, then admits them. Two Gamorrean Guards, Ortugg and Rogua, and Jabba's Twi'lek majordomo, Bib Fortuna, greet them. R2 claims to have a gift but demands to give it to Jabba. Bib takes them to Jabba's throne room, filled with many beings, including Beedo, a Rodian, Salacious B. Crumb, a Kowakian monkey-lizard, Tteel Kkakk, a Jawa, Ree-Yees, a Gran, Tessek, a Quarren, Buboicullaar, a Jawa pet, Oola, a Twi'lek dancer, and Boba Fett. A hookah and pot of Klatooine paddy-frogs await Jabba's use. R2 plays Luke's message, offering to buy Han's life and giving the droids as a gift. Jabba refuses to deal and sends the droids to EV-9D9, his sadistic Chief of Cyborg Operations. A tortured courier droid hangs nearby as 9D9 assigns 3PO to translator duty and R2 to the Ubrikkian luxury sail barge. Oola refuses Jabba's advances and is fed to his pet rancor. Boushh, an Ubese bounty-hunter, arrives and asks 50,000 credits for catching Chewie. Jabba refuses, but when Boushh threatens to use a thermal detonator, 35,000 is offered. Lando watches as Chewie is carted off, posing as a skiff guard named Tamtel Skreej. Later, Boushh frees Han from carbonite and reveals herself to be Leia, but Jabba awakens and captures them. Han is taken to Chewie's cell and Leia is made a dancing girl. The next night, Luke arrives and uses the Force to make Bib take him to Jabba, but the Hutt is immune to the Force and feeds him to the rancor. As the crowd cheers, the rancor gives chase, but Luke closes a gate on its head, killing it. Furious, Jabba decrees that they'll be cast into the Great Pit of Carkoon, where the sarlacc will digest them for 1,000 years. Later, when the sail barge visits Carkoon, a Ubrikkian Bantha II cargo skiff carries them to the Pit. Guarded by Barada (a Klatoonian), Klaatu (a Nikto), Pote Snitkin (a Skrilling), and two Weequays, Luke assures Han everything is under control, but Han is dubious. EnsViews Comic Review
