Luke, Lando, and 3PO flee troops on Ventooine, here to confirm rumors of the Shadeshine, a great power source. Hiding in a ruined temple, they find a statue of Han. Vetter Piin, church Rov and shrine caretaker, greets them and says Han saved them from the Shadeshine. Using memory stones, he lets them hear Han's tale, recorded years earlier: Landing the Falcon on Ventooine to find sansanna, a rare spice "taxed out of existence in fourteen systems," Han leaves Chewie on the ship and visits Goyoikin, capital of the only inhabited continent. He sees guards of the All-Highest Satab harassing Piin, helps him stand, and visits a lcoal cantina. Ordering grog, he asks about sansanna, angering locals and hurriedly leaving. He hides in a crowd watching the arrival of Tieress Chrysalla, the Satab's ward, whom Piin and a young peer, Phalaf, plan to bomb from above; though Piin abhors violence, they must overthrow tyrants. Trying to hijack her Royal Carriage, Han shoots the bomb; she thinks he is protecting her and takes him to a palace. Phalaf is arrested, but Piin escapes, confused that Han would help a tyrant. At the palace, Han is brought to a banquet hall filled with local elite. The Satab thanks him for saving his ward, then kills Phalaf just by holding his hand. In seconds, 18-year-old Phalaf dies of old age. Over dinner, Han realizes the locals were mad because the Satab has cornered the sansanna market. That night, he sneaks out to steal spice, but Chrysalla thinks he's looking or her and takes him to her room. He sleeps with her, unaware that the Satab and an aide, Plodgett, are spying on him. Impressed at his audacity, the Satab plans to make Han his successor. Chrysalla tells Han that each Satab uses the Shadeshine, a powerful rock, to heighten all senses for a one-year reign. She was a poor peasant before meeting the Satab, but now has all she wants in return for companionship. As breakfast is served, Han sneaks to his room, then joins them. Afterward, the Satab gives a tour of the mineral mines, arranging for a beast to attack. Han shoots a stalactite to stab it, and the Satab knows he is the one. A worker overhears him and reports to Piin, who decides to mount a coup before the change of power. That night, at a ceremony to name Han his successor and share the Shadeshine with him, the Satab exposes Piin and another monk among the ranks. Before Han can touch the stone, Chrysalla pulls his blaster, and in the chaos the monks attack the guards. Grabbing her, he runs to the throne room and tries to steal the stone and the spice, but she says all who touch the Shadeshine become too sensitive to external stimuli, "burn out" within a year, and must enter suspended animation until a cure is found. She shows him the Hall of Satabs, a zero-gravity chamber in which dying Satabs are preserved. The Satab arrives, glowing in his final moments, and destroys Han's gun with the Shadeshine. He tries to fight, but the Satab mentally hurls rocks at him, losing the stone in the fight. Chrysalla grabs it and uses it against him. He fights back but is overcome by sensitivity to his surroundings and runs for the Hall. Han hits him with a rock and his body is reduced to nothing. Piin and his fellows enter and realize Han fulfilled the Foretelling, a prophecy that an out-worlder would save them from tyranny, but Chrysalla, who will die from the Shadeshine, elects not to join the celebration or prolong the inevitable. Telling Han she'll dream of him, she enters the Hall and eternal slumber. Piin gives Han the stone to destroy in space, and after recording his tale, Han returns to the Falcon and leaves Ventooine. P> laddened by Han's voice, Luke and Lando hear a noise and hide as their pursuers arrive. Luke uses memory stones to record his voice and pretend they're in the Hall of Satabs. The troops rush in, falling victim to suspended animation and floating among the Satabs. The Rebels notice Chrysalla among them and h
