SCHOOL SPIRIT

Summary

Luke and Lando take the Cobra to Iskalon, where chiaki are scavenging the ruins of Pavillion. Here to offer aide and inform Mone of Kiro's death, they must first consider how to contact Mone. Nearby, Nagai soldiers slaughter Iskalonians and view the bodies. They wanted slaves to build a base here, but had no choice when the locals fought back. Suddenly, a dark figure approaches. Later, the School senses the uproar and investigates, just as Luke and Lando arrive. Mone introduces his new lover, Dania Francis, and thanks them for killing the Nagai. When Luke denies responsibility, the School know it was "Him." Luke tells of Kiro's death, but is shocked to hear that "Him" refers to Kiro, who is alive and helping free his people from slavers. At the Nagai base, the Cobra is spotted, a team sent to capture Luke and Lando. As Nagai storm the wreckage, Dania tries to lead the School to safety as Luke, Lando, and Mone fight, but the Nagai's sonic blaster overpowers Luke's Force abilities. One recognizes them from Endor, but Kiro slays him and the other Nagai, then returns to the sea. Luke discovers that some Nagai escaped with School prisoners. Lando fears they'll commit suicide to avoid slavery, so they don underwater gear and use Luke's lightsabers to destroy the base's foundation. Several chiaki watch, too satiated from recent meals to bother them. Nagai attack, but Kiro jumps them and feeds them to the chiaki. Glad to see him, Luke follows Kiro to save his people, leaving Lando to finish cutting. Inside, a Nagai guard threatens to torture the prisoners, then falls as Kiro slays him from behind. Luke enters to see Kiro shot by another Nagai, then kills the man and frees the School. At that moment, the structure collapses, but they escape to the surface. The Nagai hold is over, but Luke knows there are others on Gamander, Telfrey, and other worlds. As others rejoice, Luke mourns Kiro's death, but Kiro surfaces at sunset. He let Luke and Dani think Den killed him on Kinooine because he had to save his people and didn't want Dani to wait for him. Luke promises to keep the secret, his period of mourning finally over.
