Marvel Star Wars #90
THE CHOICE
Published: December 1984
Story: JO DUFFY
Art: BOB McLEOD and THOMAS PALMER
Summary

The droids arrive at Bright Tree Village shortly before Leia and Mothma. 3PO is ecstatic that they're safe, and Mothma plans to debrief Ackbar on what they've seen, but Leia wants only to talk to Luke, who has yet to arrive. As his X-Wing and the Moonshadow arrive, Leia runs to greet him, ignoring Mothma and Ackbar's attempt at meeting. She is shocked to see Rik, Dani, and Chihdo, and sad to see Kiro being taken to the medical center. An Ewok thinks Kiro is something to eat, but 3PO sets him straight. After Plif recounts Kiro's heroic actions, Luke and Leia privately discuss the choices they've made: to join the Rebellion, to keep their parentage secret, and to have the courage to start a New Republic. Leia feels like a useless figurehead, no longer a fighter, but he convinces her to be positive. They visit Kiro and give him a rebreather helmet. The wave on Shawken carried Kiro to safety, and he says he just sensed how to disable the machine. Luke realizes he is Force-sensitive but refuses to train him as a Jedi. Furious, Kiro turns his back on them. Ackbar and Mothma host the first Conference of Free Peoples. Attending are Santor, the Boss, and representatives of the following races: Aqualish, Bith, Ewok, Hoojib, Jawa, Gamorrean, Lahsbee, Nomad, Ortolan, Rodian, Trandoshan, Twi'lek, Ugnaught, and Zeltron, here to vote in a new system of government. Luke, Leia, and the droids peruse the village, noting how many soldiers now just sit around, gambling. In one card game sit Rik, Dani, Chihdo, and Kiro (who is still mad at Luke), but when a Rebel, Crin, accuses Rik of cheating, a fight breaks out between Rik's and Crin's friends. Shot, Chihdo plummets to the ground, but Luke softens his landing with the Force. As other soldiers pull guns, Kiro nearly falls as well, but as Leia stops the Ewoks from joining the fight, Luke jumps to the platform and ends it. Rik demands revenge on Crin, but Kiro begs them all never again to turn on each other out of boredom. Having forgiven Luke, he still idolizes him. Unfortunately, by not appearing at the conference, Luke and the others have all lost their right to help govern. EnsViews Comic Review
