Luke visits Solay, a world with ten suns, to help Raggold, a veteran revolutionary of fifty years, overthrow King Blackart in the wake of the Empire's death. In the final battle, as insurgents storm the royal court, Raggold is shot and dies in the arms of a girl named Mary, after warning of a traitor in their midst. Vowing to find the traitor, Luke carries him to the throne room, where they see Blackart in chains. Luke considers killing him, but Mary says revenge serves no purpose. Enamored with her but shocked as the masses loot the palace, he is comforted by her words. Later, as they sneak off together for romance, a fleet of Star Destroyers and other ships arrives. Mary is shot and anarchy erupts as the crowd makes the most of their last hours, and when looters scavenge her jewels, Luke levitates her to him. She dies in his arms, and he is devastated. As time passes, the Rebels go into hiding as the Empire resumes control. Luke wanders the town, seeking the traitor, until a young child, Scamp, tries to steal his 'saber and says he can help find him. Though young, he is street-smart. Dubious, Luke follows him to a massage parlor, finding a rebel who sold out to the Empire. As Scamp steals his money, Luke interrogates him but learns little, so they visit a spaceport, to which Blackart has escaped to get off-world. Luke corners him and asks who the traitor was, but Blackart beats him up and steals a rocket. Using a rocket pack, Luke pursues and severs the tip of the rocket, making it crash. Finding Blackart in the rubble, Luke makes him talk, but he knows nothing about the traitor. Dejected, Luke walks away, losing faith in his cause and in the Force. Scamp brings Luke to his home to show that he steals to feed his family, for his abusive father makes him do so. Humbled, Luke follows him to a bar, where Braxas, an alien who makes a business of knowing everything, offers a tape of Raggold's death for passage off-world (he has many enemies), if Luke passes a simple test: reach into a cup of meat without getting bitten by a scorpion. Relying on the Force, he passes the test and the tape is his, but he is shocked to learn that Raggold was the traitor and killed himself in shame. Luke and Braxas leave Solay, but Luke vows to return and finish the battle Mary began.
