Marvel Star Wars #88
FIGUREHEAD

Story: JO DUFFY
Art: BOB McLEOD and THOMAS PALMER
Summary

Leia, Mothma, and the droids visit Herdessa to invite its ruling Guild to join the Alliance, but members of the crowd heckle them. Lumiya, the Borg chief of planetary security, is assigned to protect them. A mud-ball hits Leia's face, and Lumiya's forces give chase as the culprits, Suzu and Finn, flee. Brylin, Guild spokesman, invites them to his home to discuss business, angry when Leia suggests the masses take part in the discussion. Apparently, Herdessa is not quite so democratic. Brylin and two aides, Tof and Gaza, provide Deltron spice wine and food, stalling discussion and offering to find sexual partners for the evening, even Zeltrons. Leia's bigoted response, "No Zeltrons!," startles Mothma. She takes a stroll in Guild Sector Three, joined by the droids, spies Lumiya torturing Suzu, and intercedes, but Lumiya hits her. Suzu runs and Leia flips Lumiya and follows. Lumiya calls for backup as Suzu heads to a den of rebels, where Leia sustains verbal abuse of her royal heritage but is still determined to help. Mothma tries to find Leia, but the Guild has other plans. Suzu accepts Leia's sincerity but scorns her use as a fighter. As Lumiya's troops storm the room, Leia tries reasoning but the oppressive troops just shoot or capture everyone, so she escapes. She seeks help at local homes, but all ignore her, fearing Guild reprisal. Lumiya follows Leia as Mothma and Finn are herded for slavery to the Lava Mines of Vanan. Suzu finds Leia, who sees troops amid the slavers and realizes the Empire is behind this. Lumiya calls everyone from their homes, threatening to kill the prisoners if Leia isn't found. Mothma addresses the crowd on the futility of accepting oppression, but when Finn attacks his captors, Lumiya decides to kill him. As Suzu runs out of the brush, offering Leia's life for his, Leia suddenly shoots the guards and Lumiya from behind. The locals, spurred into action, take arms and overthrow the Guild. Suzu and Finn are amazed at Leia's skills, but Lumiya is unaccounted for. Later, as the Rebels depart to warn the Alliance of the Empire's strength and actions here, Lumiya vows revenge on Leia.
