Marvel Star Wars #79
THE BIG CON
Published: January 1984
Story: JO DUFFY
Art: RON FRENZ and THOMAS PALMER
Summary

At a bar in Arcan IV's Commercial District, patrons throw cups and food at a wanted poster for Han; one thug, Sanda, wishes she could collect Jabba's 100,000-credit bounty, but her partner, Lemo, regrets seeing any smuggler caught by bounty hunters and wishes Han were here to help find statues they seek, the Minstrel and the Dancing Goddess. Chewie arrives, intimidating the bouncer to gain entry without a password, and when Lemo and Sanda try to check on him, Lando arrives, posing as a rogue in his Drebble disguise. He orders rum, warns them not to anger "the Wookiee," and says he's here to help find the statues, and that the thugs are fools for not freeing Han Solo, an expert at finding artifacts. At their doubt, he says everyone "this side of the Wheel" knows how Han found Vol on Stenos. One thug, Koruu, pulls a gun, but Lando dispatches him with a knife so fast none see him move. He and Chewie return to the Cobra , in Hangar 7 of the spaceport, where he removes his wig and calms Chewie's doubts, noting the Falcon would be recognized as Han's ship. He uses Drebble's name on dangerous missions so anyone he angers will look up his old enemy, not him. He himself owns the statues, having won them in a card game on Bespin, never knowing their worth until now. The gang arrives to buy dinner, so Lando dons his disguise and they take a hover car to an isolated bistro. Chewie finds the food spicy and downs a pitcher of Deltron spice wine, which is hotter than the food. Over dinner, Lemo says Fett took Han to Jabba's palace on Tatooine, but Lando, tipsy, says he already looked there. Having denied knowing Han, he has now blown his cover. As the gang reacts, Chewie flips the table. He and Lando steal a hover car, pursued by Lemo and Sanda, stopping to ask a prostitute for directions to the port. Punchy due to lack of business, she sends them the wrong way on a busy road, where they narrowly avoid an accident. The gang chases them against traffic, but as they jump a bridge wall and escape down a side-street, Lemo and Sanda collide with an oncoming vehicle. Other gang members find them, so Chewie drops onto their car and tosses them out, but he and Lando collide their cars and are thrown free. One thug, Dafi, finds them, shocked to see the Minstrel with them. When Lemo arrives, she greedily shoots him, intent on keeping it for herself. In the chaos, Lando and Chewie return to the Cobra ; their next stop: Tatooine. EnsViews Comic Review
