Marvel Star Wars #74
THE ISKALON EFFECT
Published: August 1983
Story: JO DUFFY
Art: RON FRENZ and THOMAS PALMER
Summary

Luke, Leia, Lando, Chewie, and the droids visit watery Iskalon to find Tay Vanis, Yom Argo's partner, led here by Argo's tapes. Others search for Han, but Leia and Luke wish they could help. Iskalon shares its system with Gamandar and Telfrey, all Imperial-run. Landing at Pavillion, Luke is awed by the oceans, Leia is reminded of Alderaan, and the droids fear sinking to the bottom. Mone, a local, splashes them playfully. Chewie nearly kills him, but Luke stops him as Lando arrives to introduce his old friend, who knows Vanis. Touring Pavillion, Iskalon's largest air-tank/landing port, they use comm devices in the glass walls to communicate with the swimming natives. As a squad of troops, adapted to water, scout for Rebels, Primor, Mone's father and leader of the School, says Argo and Vanis fomented rebellion when the Empire attacked Gamandar and Telfrey, their worlds. In response, the Empire subjugated Gamandar, destroyed all life on Telfrey, and made Iskalon a military state. Iskalon sent emissaries to Gamandar, but the Empire killed them as well. Surprisingly, Vanis and Argo were at Yavin IV. Kendle, Mone's wife, says Vanis stored Imperial data in his droid, K-3PX, but left it at Gamandar's fortress. Chewie and Lando want to visit the fortress, but the School warns of danger, and unknown to the group, a spy listens nearby. Mone and the droids volunteer to help Lando and Chewie, and as they leave, Kendle and Mone don water-tanks to bid farewell. Later, the Falcon heads to Gamandar, where Imperials herd the locals as slaves. Admiral Tower's spy tells what he heard, then Tower calls Vader and plans to destroy Iskalon, including his own troops, in order to kill the Rebels. Luke and Leia don air-tanks and stingers as Primor provides a tour. Mone tells Lando and Chewie he and Kendle helped Vanis after his family died in the holocaust. Suddenly, Luke sees Kendle dying in the air-breathers' tank, but as they rush to help, Tower unleashes a missile into the oceans, starting an "Iskalon Effect" and destroying Pavillion in a huge tidal wave.
