Marvel Star Wars #42
To Be A Jedi
Published: December 1980
Story: ARCHIE GOODWIN
Art: AL WILLIAMSON with CARLOS GARZON
Summary

On Dagobah, Luke and R2 view the sinking X-Wing. Luke turns to see a small being holding a gimer stick; not knowing this is Yoda, he is short-tempered with him. Yoda tastes a food concentrate stick, spits it out, steals Luke's lamp, and promises to take him to Yoda. Two Star Destroyers fire at the crater hiding the Falcon but finally give up. Han corners Leia in an alcove and kisses her, but she stops him quickly. Aboard Executor , Piett tells Vader the Emperor awaits. In his private chamber, Vader calls Palpatine, who senses Luke and fears he might destroy them, but Vader vows to turn him to the Dark Side. Luke grows impatient as Yoda feeds him and claims to know his father. Disgusted, Yoda refuses to teach him, and Luke realizes who he is. Ben's voice argues for Luke, but having taught Jedi for 800 years, Yoda thinks him too unfocused and old. Finally, he gives in and training begins. Han, Leia, and Chewie scout near the Falcon and find mynocks on ship. Spying moist, spongy ground, Han fires his blaster, causing tremors, then hurries everyone back in the ship and blasts off as the cave entrance, the mouth of a huge space slug, nearly closes on them. Luke trains with Yoda, learning to levitate objects, control his body, and improve his lightsaber skills, but fails at raising his ship from the swamp, disappointing Yoda, who raises it easily. Aboard Executor , Piett is annoyed when Vader hires bounty hunters Boba Fett, Bossk (from Trandosha), Dengar (a Borg), Zuckuss (from Gand), 4-LOM (an Industrial Automation protocol droid), and IG-88 (a Holowan Mechanicals assassin droid) to find the Falcon . However, the Falcon is spotted. Near the Anoat System, as Han leaves the asteroid field, Avenger resumes its attack. The Falcon still won't work, so Han pretends to ram Avenger , pulling up at the last second. Needa thinks it jumped to hyperspace and realizes he's failed Vader, but the Falcon clings to Avenger 's side. Piett reports to Vader, who disperses the fleet. Avenger dumps garbage before jumping to lightspeed and Han disengages the Falcon , letting the garbage conceal it, then heads for the Bespin System to seek help from Lando Calrissian. However, Boba Fett follows in his Kuat Systems Firespray -class ship, Slave 1 .
