Marvel Star Wars #26
DOOM MISSION
Published: August 1979
Story: ARCHIE GOODWIN
Art: CARMINE INFANTINO and BOB WIACEK
Summary

3PO often says his friends are doomed, but this time Luke shares his fears as he prepares to eject the others in an escape pod, but X-Wings stave off the TIEs and escort them home. They crash but survive, then brief Dodonna and the others on their discovery. Willard fears the Empire's ability to defeat them, so Luke and R2 take a Y-Wing to find the signal device of a TIE that crashed on another moon. The TIE pilot is alive and tries to destroy them along with the ship, but when R2 stops the detonator, he attacks and Luke is forced to kill him for the device. R2 is damaged, but the Rebels lack supplies to fix him. That night, Leia joins Luke atop the ruins as he considers his failures using the Force and finding a new base, reminding him he was the only pilot to survive the search. Dodonna arrives and assigns him to destroy the Imperial base using the signal device and a TIE they've had for years. Leia protests but Luke agrees, and as 3PO mourns for R2, she mourns for him. Luke departs, signals the storm corridor to open, and enters Yavin to find Turbine Station and the Tagge Mining Explorer. Shanks interrupts Orman's lightsaber practice to say a TIE has arrived. Though Shanks fears being discovered, Orman is sure of his own success. Suddenly, Luke attacks the station with proton charges. The base is undefended and explodes, but without the station, Luke must use the Force to guide him out. He returns to Yavin IV, confident in his control of the Force, unaware the Tagge ship has followed him out. Furious, Orman vows revenge on Luke for ending his chance to gain the Emperor's favor over Vader. EnsViews Comic Review
