More Children's Books!

Posted By Paul on March 13, 2009

New information has appeared about Star Wars books aimed primarily at younger readers: these range from UK-exclusive Clone Wars material, to the latest episode in the adventures of Luke, Han and Leia after the Battle of Yavin!

First of all, StarWars.com has a preview of Firefight, the fourth book in Alex Wheeler's "Rebel Force" series, in which Imperial assassin X-7 is recruiting a team of mercenary starfighter pilots to take on Luke Skywalker and Rogue Squadron. This categorically clears up the confusion about where in the series this title came. The book is also on Amazon with a price of $6.99 and a release-date of 1st September!

Secondly, there's a page at Amazon.com for a drawing book based on the Clone Wars cartoons, entitled Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars by Bonnie Burton, published by Klutz with a cover price of $16.95, and a release date of August 19.

And last, but by no means least, there are descriptive blurbs online at Amazon UK for a number of the upcoming Clone Wars children's books in the Ladybird line, due for publication in Great Britain. This adds to the earlier information about these titles that we knew already.

First of these, and probably easier to explain, is Journey Through Hyperspace, a "3-D Adventure Book", with a release date of 2nd July, and a cover price of ?3.99 (a discount is available on Amazon, and similar offers can probably be found at other retailers). This includes a "MagnaGuard mask" that presumably acts as a 3-D viewer for the pictures inside. We speculated earlier that the plotline might be based on the trip from Teth to Tatooine in the movie, and the new blurb does confirm Tatooine as the destination, but it also mentions "a rebel SOS signal", which wasn't in the movie - so the story may be a new, stand-alone adventure instead.

The other two UK books with new blurbs are more complicated: these are the first two installments in the UK version of the "Decide your Destiny" series, The Way of the Jedi, and Tethan Battle Adventure, both with a cover price of ?5.99 (discounted on Amazon and perhaps elsewhere) and again with a release date of 2nd July.

As we reported before, a book called The Way of the Jedi has already been released in the USA by Grosset & Dunlap as the first in a series with the same title. It seems likely that much of the actual story/game material remains the same in the UK book of the same name, but according to the new blurb, the UK editions of these books will contain puzzles to solve, providing access codes to online content on the internet - a feature that (I believe) was not present in the American version. It seems that the cover slogan "Jump in and out of Cyberspace!" means just what it says.

It's worth adding that in the USA, the second "Decide Your Destiny" book is titled The Lost Legion. There's no word on this title in the UK yet, but I wonder if Tethan Battle Adventure might be based on this in some way.

Thanks to friend of TF.N Dustin D for the "Rebel Force" news, and to our regular source Eddie from Once Upon A Galaxy for everything else in this update! As usual, we'll try and bring you more news on these stories as soon as we get it!
