This is the fourteenth and I believe final book in the Young Jedi Knight series. Anja Gallandro goes through severe spice withdrawal and steals Zekk's ship, the Lightning Rod, to go on a drug run. She heads to Kessel, of course. When she arrives, she learns of a Black Sun spice stash under the ice caps of the Mon Calamari home planet. She also realizes that Czethros has been lying to her all along about spice and the death of her father. She's determined to break her addiction and ruin Black Sun's plans. She heads to Mon Calamari to destroy their stash. Of course, the rest of the gang chases after their friend. Half stay at Kessel, with Nein Nunb (the new administrator of the mines) and break up a Black Sun move to take over the planet. The rest of the kids go to Mon Calamari and are attacked in a sub by a giant sea creature. They all make up and have a big awards ceremony at the end ala ANH.
Scott:
It was cool to see Nein Nunb get some attention for once. After all, he was a major player in the battle against the second Death Star. I don't recall seeing him since the films. So I liked that. The cover by Dave Dorman was also very nice looking. The blues are very eye catching, and the sub is a neat touch. It was also interesting to read the attack of the sea creature on the sub right after seeing a similar situation in the prequel trailer. Odd, eh?
Scott:
This book wasn't really bad. It just didn't spark my interest. The story was fairly predictable. I mean, you knew Anja would turn good as soon as we met her several books earlier. And the takeover of Kessel by the Black Sun stooges was pretty weak. It could have been a little more intense or difficult instead of easily overthrown. Also, in one scene, the Knight's sub gets stuck in some ice under the polar ice cap. To get out, they have to swim out and use their lightsabers to break free. I was wondering why a sub full of Jedi couldn't use their Force powers to push themselves free or break the ice. After all, they always lift rocks at the Academy. I also didn't think Nein Nunb would go from hotshot pilot to a spice mine administrator, but what do I know. It's possible. But again, this was an average adventure.
Scott:
Flash frozen baddies.
