The Force Unleahsed Preview By IGN

Posted By Mike on August 19, 2008

IGN offers up a very positive preview of The Force Unleashed from the gameplay to the story. See the excerpt below and click here for the full perview.

"...After playing through a few levels of The Force Unleashed last week, it appears that LucasArts may indeed deliver on its promise and give us a new look at the Force like we've never experienced..."

"From the start, it's immediately evident that the control setup is put together in a way that allows you work with both your lightsaber and Force powers in a very smooth and cohesive manner. Two face buttons work your saber with quick and heavy attacks, while another unleashes a Force push, which is an incredibly effective way of finishing off a lightsaber combo. The right trigger makes use of the Force grab (releasing it then uses Force push), while the left trigger acts as a modifier for Force powers. For example, holding the left trigger while enacting a Force push will unleash an area push, shoving everything around you away from you, while using the left trigger with a lightsaber attack button will perform a lightsaber throw.

The cool bit about the lightsaber combat system is that while you can quickly mash on buttons to dispose of an enemy, steady and timed presses will reward you with better combos. It's an interesting system that isn't apparent at the start, but once you start experimenting with it, you'll wind up finishing off enemies with a few more twists and slashes from your trusty saber."

UPDATE: Click here to check out "Updated Impressions" of The Force Unleashed on the Wii over at IGN. Excerpt below...

"Coming back to the controls, it must be said that movement control on Wii isn't as smooth as it could be at this stage (and with the game coming out in late September we're assuming it's not going to change much), with camera control in particular a bit of a weak point - one of the disadvantages of only having one analogue stick we guess. You won't always have the camera facing where you want, and there'll often be enemies shooting at you from off screen. This makes the dash move a little less effective than it could have been, and certainly impacts on the rhythm of the boss battles (despite the ability to 'lock on' by tapping down on the D-pad).

Thankfully, we didn't have too many problems adjusting, and aside from mounted gun emplacements, which can mow you down pretty quickly, enemy blaster fire doesn't pose much of a threat from close range and is automatically deflected from a distance. Hooray for the Force. It's far from perfect, but you'll get used to it. You're also able to go into a first person free look mode by holding up on the D pad, which is useful for getting your bearings but still pretty clunky."
