Nintendo Announces Wii MotionPlus

Posted By Mike on August 14, 2008

From the press release at Nintendic:

"Nintendo?s upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space.

The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player?s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion.

Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo?s commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone.

Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing."

I know this is not specifically Star Wars related but we do have two games on the horizon promising lightsaber action in The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This news makes the awesome lightsaber experience that has been promised all the more feasible. Along the same lines, Star Wars: The Clone Wars was just previewed today in Nintendo's presentation at E3. More info on that as we get it.

UPDATE: Apparently, developers were not given any notice as to the release of the Wii MotionPlus that was unvelied at E3. From Shacknews.com:

"The lack of any advance notice effectively negates the possibility of Wii MotionPlus integration in titles such as Krome Studios' Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels (Wii), which is said to focus squarely on motion-controlled lightsaber combat."

Guess that means that we'll have to be excited about what the Wii MotionPlus will bring to lightsaber action in games post The Clone Wars and TFU.

UPDATE #2: A bit more on LucasArts being caught off guard (and not too happy about it) with the new Wii MotionPlus here at Kotaku.
