Galaxies Editorial Feedback
Posted By Tom on July 22, 2005
I've received a lot of feedback on the editorial I wrote and published, and like I promised, now it's time for some of your feedback to be heard. A lot of the feedback agreed with me - and went on to talk about some of the other problems plaguing the game. A fair number of comments were from the Combat Upgrade, and trust us - that is an issue people are not getting over easily. Many more mentioned the plight of the Smugglers, and many also mentioned Jedi and how prolific they've become. What follows are some of the e-mails I've received.
I totally agree. I did quit because of all of those reasons and more. Sadly all of those are running problems in every MMORGs I have played. I played EQ for over 3 years and quit because of those reasons before. Moved to WOW, SWG, CoH and others. All have the same issues that they are all out for a buck and care not for quality gaming. It is terribly sad and I have forbidden myself to play any of these online games until I get some conformation that the new game has none of these issues. My money is too valuable to waste on garbage. Thanks for making these things public.
-Jerry
I have been playing EQ since 1999. During that time everything you've mentioned in this article has occurred in one form or another in EverQuest. I've been frustrated by the game at times and have quit playing for months at a time during the past 6 years. Currently, I'm playing EQ rather casually ... Basically, your criticisms are common place for MMORPG in my experience. There are always problems and there's always a bottom line driving things. You see balance issues, game breaking changes for some players, poor CS, bad quality assurance pushing known bugs live and a whole host of problems. -James
Just read the editorial on SWG, and have to admit that I agree with four of the points raised. However, I think the statement raised in point 2 about the grouping is pretty poor to say the least.
Firstly, let me just say that I'm a game veteran of around 18 months so have some idea about the in's and out's of the SWG world. I joined knowing absolutely nobody who played or had any interest in playing this game, yet have got to know a number of people, some of whom I still keep in contact with even though they've moved on to other pastures. ... Let's not forget one of the most important points here - SWG is an community based online game. It is a means of meeting new players, and getting involved in a universe brought to our attention with the advent of the first Star Wars movie back in the 70's.
Yes, it has it's problems and as previously stated I agree with the other points raised in the editorial, but you only have to look at the SWG forums to get an understanding of what this game is all about. As stated previously, if other player interaction is not what you want then this game is not for you.
-an SWG Veteran
I disagree almost entirely with the points of the editorial. I started an account the day SWG hit retail shelves, and have participated in the Galaxy as the game has grown. Many times I have been frustrated, and there were even spells of a month or two where even though I was paying, I did not log in. However, I think that the improvements and expansions made to the game since its launch have been exciting and fun to play through; and while there have certainly been bugs; they do not create the level of problems some detractors would like you to believe. I read the user forums quite a bit, and frankly, most of the ?problems? described on those forums, my character has never encountered.
I can boil it down to this, and I think this assessment is pretty fair: If you enjoy role-playing games, then SWG provides an excellent canvass for which to role-play a Star Wars character. The environments are incredible and there are good rules built in for a very wide variety of classes and hybrid class characters.
If you play SWG as the game; that is, your play is centered around what the game mechanics DO, or how a particular quest is written, that is you play the code and not in the environment the code provides, then it will be sorely disappointing. Look for holes, bugs, problems, glitches, or even exploits and you will find them? easily.
-Alon
Overall, while realizing the obvious problems with the game, I still feel the overall game play is worthwhile and entertaining. I've been a 2-year player, suffered through countless bugs, problems, and the infamous combat upgrade but I still find myself logging on daily and enjoying the time I put into my characters. I do recommend SWG to new players looking for a good game to play. The issues are not that catastrophic to keep me or my friends away.
-Gilad
With regards to Point 1 - I've had excellent service with some CSRs and absolutely horrific experiences with others. If I had to give a percentage, I'd say it's been 60/40 in favour of good. The good CSRs usually play the game and want to help while others, well, I keep thinking I'm getting CSRs on their training day.
With regards to Point 2 - With the heavy turnover of players, player run towns and guilds have been collapsing, or merging, or being recreated so that as a unguilded player - you'll usually have at least 1 encounter at a major starport of someone trying to recruit you into their guild. Once that happens things get easier.
All in all, I don't see how the game can ever be truly fixed unless they stop all development work and concentrate on the bugs - but they have it in their mind that the only thing that matters is "New Content" Maybe that's unfair - but they certainly don't communicate their thoughts with us.
-Dean
I completely disagree. While crafters are due for some love in SWG the game is still quite enjoable as a crater. Blanket statements to cancel accounts or not even try the game sound like the gripes of someone with a personal issue with the game and do not represent the majority of players. Truthfully its the older players that seem to be leaving as they are unwilling to adapt to the post CU system where they are not Uber tanks anymore. If you want to leave do it quitely without the vendetta. Most of us still enjoy the game and you represent a small vocal minority. Let people decide themselves.
-Peter
That's some selections from the first 80-some-odd e-mails. A few threads have also cropped up on the Official Galaxies forums, in the Wanderhome and Chimaera galaxy forums. If I continue receiving this volume of e-mail (and I suspect I will) there will be more follow-ups. That e-mail address is, one more time, night4554@theforce.net.
