The Clone Wars Panel At WonderCon 2011

Posted By Eric on April 2, 2011

This evening, Dave Filoni and Joel Aron from Lucasfilm Animation took part in a panel at WonderCon 2011 where they discussed the past and future of The Clone Wars. The panel included a Q&A and a new montage of clips from Season 4's adventures. Peter Mayhew was also in attendance to discuss the introduction of Chewbacca in the Season 3 finale.

If you want to see pictures from the panel, Lucasfilm's Bonnie Burton was Twitpic-ing up a storm, the results of which you can see here.

I'd also like to point out a rather interesting Q&A response from Dave, courtesy of EU Cantina (SEASON 4 SPOILER ALERT):

Q: More classic characters? A: You saw one in the trailer.

"The trailer" refers to last night's Cartoon Network Season 4 teaser trailer. After parsing that video frame-by-frame, I feel quite confident in saying that the only possible classic character in that footage is none other than Ackbar himself. If true, this would be an excellent addition to the era and a nice way to explore the background of everyone's favorite Admiral.

You can read more from the Q&A on EU Cantina's Twitter feed. You can also view the WonderCon Season 4 sneak preview here.

UPDATE: TFN reader Chris sent over the following report from the TCW panel...

"The Clone Wars panel at Wondercon 2011 was hosted by Pablo Hidalgo and focused on the Season 3 finale episodes, Padawan Lost and Wookie Hunt. Pablo quickly introduced Supervising Director Dave Filoni and voice of Ahsoka Tano, Ashley Eckstein. The two discussed Ahsoka's growth since her debut in the the Clone Wars film to these finale episodes and how much she has matured. Filoni said her new design reflects Anakin's move towards the Dark Side. He also referred to the the last scene of Wookie Hunt with Yoda and how it was Yoda who wanted Anakin to have a Padawan after his mother's death.

Filoni did mention that with the season finale episodes we now have 66 episodes aired and George Lucas might be aiming for at least 100. We can only hope for many more than that.

We then watched a behind the scenes clip about how Peter Mayhew contributed to bringing his character, Chewbacca, to the animated realm. The video was previously available at StarWars.com here. Mayhew discussed how he voiced Chewbacca in these episodes and that it was his wife, Angie, who convinced him to do it. Mayhew then praised the Clone Wars crew for their contribution and excellence in Star Wars storytelling.

Next, CG Supervisor, Joel Aron, came out to discuss how the environment was a character in these episodes. Specifically the moon of Wasskah, were Aron states this is the first location in the Clone Wars were we see thorns and leaves. While discussing the crash scene, in which we first see Chewbacca, Aron confided that he is a closet plane crash fanatic, which helped him to design the crash, and he really likes the smell of the clay used for the initial character sculptures before they're built in the animation software.

We then watched a teaser for Season 4 which included, from what I could see, an underwater Kit Fisto, a Besalisk Jedi and a shot of C-3PO and R2-D2 floating in space. This was a different clip than what was shown after the Season 3 finale aired.

The panel ended with a Q&A. The funniest moment came when a boy around seven years old asked Filoni if he remembered him. When Filoni hesitated to answer the boy said that he was taken back stage for the Clone Wars panel last year. When the boy gave up Filoni called him to the stage and gave him a Plo Kool pin. Of course we've all been trying to procure one of those."

Thanks Chris!
