Woman Sues Over Hooter's Prize
Former Waitress Says She Was Duped
PANAMA CITY, Fla., 11:35 a.m. EDT July 27, 2001 -- A Panama City woman is suing the Hooter's restaurant where she used to work, saying that the new car she thought she won was really a "Stars Wars" toy.
Jodee Berry says that she worked at the place last spring, when the manager announced a new contest for employees to boost beer sales. She says that she was told the winner of the regional contest would get a "new Toyota." Berry assumed it was a car and was delighted to be told she had won.
But the lawsuit says that when she was blindfolded and led to the parking lot to receive the prize, it turned out to be a "toy Yoda." A miniature version of the "Star Wars" character.
Berry says that manager Jared Blair was inside laughing at her. She's suing for damages and attorneys' fees. She says that a company shouldn't be allowed to treat its workers like that.
Pensacola attorney Stephen West is handling the case. He says all the workers at the restaurant were led to believe a car was the prize.
Hooter's officials haven't commented, saying that they haven't seen the lawsuit.
