The official site announced today that Del Rey have retained the contract to publish Star Wars books for the next few years.
This was no real surprise, given the two new books already announced on the Random House website for 2009, but the announcement contains some new details: there will be 35 novels and 10 "nonfiction" books.
For a five-year contract, that means seven novels a year. Nine of these will be part of the new Fate of the Jedi series, which will be published at the rate of three books a year like "Legacy of the Force", but in a new departure for the franchise, will be released entirely in hardcover. We now have a title for Aaron Allston's series opener, Outcast, and confirmation on Troy Denning and newcomer Christine Golden as the other two authors in the series.
Of the other books, we already know that Elaine Cunningham's standalone paperback Blood Oath will be released in April 2009. That means there are three other novels next year, four as yet unrevealed in 2010 and 2011, and seven a year in 2012 and 2013.
One of these is presumably the Boba Fett novel mentioned by Karen Traviss, although I suspect that the ongoing Commando and "Clone Wars" series might continue to be on separate game and TV tie-in contracts.
The "nonfiction" books will appear at an average of two a year, including The Making of The Empire Strikes Back in 2010, and some new volumes in the Essential Guides series. At least, I assume these are classed as "nonfiction" even though they're normally set within the Star War Galaxy...

Also, thanks to the girl at the computer next to me for catching a major typo in the first draft of this announcement.
UPDATE: More details on the new contract and publishing schedule were released this morning from StarWars.com. Most notably, the title for the second novel in the new Fate of the Jedi series will be Enigma. The book will be released sometime in the summer of 2009 and will be written by Christie Golden. Outcast, the first book in the series by Aaron Allston, is slated for an April release.
Elaine Cunningham's new novel Blood Oath will be released in spring and will feature Zekk after the events of Legacy of the Force.
Hidden within the list of unspecific release dates are three new fiction projects: A sequel to the Darth Bane books by Drew Karpyshyn in 2010, a standalone hardcover "Set in the time of the ancient Jedi Knights," by Alex Irvine, and an original paperback novel penned by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff in 2011. No other details on the collaboration are given.
