On August 31st, Verizon launched an R2-D2 Droid 2 giveaway contest on their @DroidLanding Twitter account. Gadget geeks who hold dual citizenship as Star Wars fans can follow Verizon's tweets for clues that could lead to a free R2 phone.
As the Twitter account explains, "The Droid R2-D2 schematics are scattered across the web. Standby for clues from Artoo. Join the search."
I haven't tried this myself, but it looks like the contest has a few steps.
1. Verizon will tweet links to messages from R2 himself. These links simply lead to beeps and boops from the astromech, but the web address of each message can be inputted on Verizon's R2-Droid2 website (click on "Tweet Translator") to be translated by C-3PO. (Anthony Daniels provides the voice for the translations and has congratulated one winner on Twitter.)
2. Based on what C-3PO says, you will scavenge the Internet trying to find a string of letters and numbers that, when entered on the website, will unlock sections of the R2-Droid2 promo page. The Twitter account haspictures of the "routes" that the first two winners took to complete their hunts. These clues can lead scavengers to YouTube videos, Amazon book listings, and more.
So far, two sections have been unlocked: "Device Gallery" (where you can see the phone from various angles) and "Apps + Widgets" (where we learn that the exclusive SW apps include an R2 clock widget with the time holo-projected).
Only six website sections remain to be unlocked, so get started today and you could score an R2-Droid2 phone!
Rebelscum Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Patch Posted By Philip on November 25, 2014: Thanks to everybody that ordered patches. I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
