Star Wars: The Eighties Strike Back

Posted By Mike on May 5, 2010

Simon MacDonald writes in:

Years ago you helped me promote my musical for the Florida Fringe Festival, A Long Time Ago, The Eighties Review. Again, I need your help to get the word out for A Long Time Ago... Star Wars: The Eighties Strike Back. My original 2003 performance has been picked up and expanded by my High School Alma Mater, Lake Howell High School. I have attached instructions crucial to the performance (location, time, price) in this email. Please deliver this to your main page. People will see it and it will garner attention. This is our most desperate hour. Help us, person at-a-keyboard, you're our only hope.

-Simon MacDonald-

P.S. Not only am I the playwright, but I'm also known at LEGO Boba Fett/ SIMAFOL.

LAKE HOWELL THEATER COMPANY PROUDLY PRESENTS STAR WARS: THE EIGHTIES STRIKE BACK

The Lake Howell Theater Company introduces an exciting new musical parody of the original Star Wars Trilogy! STAR WARS: THE EIGHTIES STRIKE BACK tells the story of Luke Skywalker?s battle against the Dark Side of the Force represented by Darth Vader?with an exciting New Wave twist! The show will be presented for one night only at Lake Howell High School in Winter Park, on Friday, October 23rd at 7pm.

Tickets will be available at the door or in advance for five dollars.

The show will be staged in the Lake Howell Performing Arts Center at 4200 Dike Road, Winter Park, FL 32792.

It will be produced and directed by James Brendlinger.

The script began its life at the Orlando Fringe Festival, performed by its author, Lake Howell graduate Simon MacDonald, and a ragtag band of rebels determined to fight the Galactic Empire through their unique mix of dance, music, acting, and pop culture. MacDonald has returned to Lake Howell to share the force of his expanded vision with over one hundred Lake Howell High School actors, technicians, singers, dancers, and artists. The piece is also being considered for a return engagement to the Orlando Fringe Festival in 2010.

Thanks for letting us know, Simon. Good luck with your performance and May the Force be with you!

UPDATE: Our friend Simon writes in with new Star Wars: The Eighties Strike Back news:

"My show is being performed again by Lake Howell High School in Winter Park, FL. The school has never done the same show more than once in one year. It's on Tuesday the 18th at 7 P.M., so it's a perfect lead in to Star Wars Weekends. Tickets are only $5. We're using this performance to get the interest for Celebration V.

Star Wars: A Long Time Ago... The Eighties Strike back is an original parody, retelling the Original Trilogy in an 80's genre. All the characters, dialogue and music are seeping with nostalgia. Come and join others in story telling and song with the addition of karaoke lyrics.

The show got its feet off the ground in 2003 at the Florida Fringe Festival. Selling out five of its seven shows, it was the sleeper hit. The author, Simon MacDonald, is an improviser at SAK Theater. His original production has grown from a seven person performance to a full stage musical directed by James Brendlinger at Lake Howell High School.
