AnotherUniverse.Com interviewed Ray Park. Here's a little bit of what was said:
Darth Maul's gravity-defying leaps in the final battle sequence were based on lessons Park had learned from his martial arts instructor. "My coach said, 'You've got to learn to fly, like a butterfly. You've got to have hang time,'" recalled Park, who practices a Northern Shaolin method called wushu. His martial arts training also helped him brandish Darth Maul's unique, double-bladed lightsaber so gracefully. It helped that the device was actually similar to an ages-old weapon called a bo staff. "When it came to using the lightsaber, it was no problem for me," Park said. He even asked Lucas to lengthen the handle of the lightsaber to make it more like a staff and therefore easier to wield. Lucas obliged.
Park's most-cherished on-set memory also is from the showdown between Darth Maul and the two Jedi warriors. It seems that as the actors crossed swords while filming the spectacular scene, each of them kept making "whoosh, whoosh" noises, imitating the familiar sound lightsabers emitted in the original Star Wars films. "I don't think George needed to add sound effects, because we were doing it," Park said with a laugh.
