It was just last week that we posted about an interview with Star Wars 1313 Creative Director Dominic Robillard in which he praised the background of LucasArts President Paul Meegan. From Robillard's interview with Digital Trends:
"Robilliard admits that in his time at LucasArts, he?s seen some seismic internal shifts, adding that the new guard brings a special flavor of experience to the table that you don?t often see on the executive level. ?The reason it?s taken a few years to get something out that we can show is we?ve completely changed the way we?re making games here,? he explained. ?Our current president, Paul Meegan, is the first executive I?ve worked for who used to be a developer. So he?s a game designer and he?s risen up through the ranks as an entrepreneurial game developer.?
?It?s very different working for people like that. They have a very specific way of wanting to make games. My immediate boss, the studio creative director Fred Markus, he has an in-the-trenches creative background at Ubisoft. He spent a lot of time working on their pre-production and concepting process, and worked on the inception of games like Splinter Cell and Assassin?s Creed and Prince of Persia.?'
Unfortunately, that relationship seems to have been short-lived as Digital Trends is now reporting the LucasArts President Paul Meegan has stepped down. As a fan, this is certainly disheartening especially considering the high expectations being placed on Star Wars 1313. While some games garner attention simply from beautiful cut scenes, this one is anticipated just as much for the game play as it is the visuals. LucasArts has stated that Meegan's departure won't hurt any projects currently in development. We'll keep our fingers crossed and hope that is move doesn't lead to any delays in the game and also doesn't interfere with the new close working relationship between Lucasfilm and LucasArts. As always, we'll continue to keep you posted as we learn more.
I stumbled across this news while compiling a bit of a Star Wars 1313 round-up post. We'll get to that in a bit but figured the news regarding Meegan's departure warranted its own post. We wish Paul the best in his future endeavors and, as fans, thank him for his efforts during his two years with LucasArts.
