In a new poll conducted by ABC News and People Magazine, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope has been crowned the best science-fiction movie in history. The full results were unveiled tonight on the ABC website during a special ABC broadcast entitled "The Greatest Movies Of All Time."

In the Sci-Fi category, 1977's A New Hope beat out E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Avatar (2009), The Matrix (1999), and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). A vote percentage breakdown was not published.

The announcement of the poll results is timely, as today, March 22, is the 35th anniversary of the start of principal photography on A New Hope.
