Alert fans have spotted evidence on-line for two up-coming books projects.
First, you may remember that we ran a story last month on a rumored Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, a sequel to the original 1998 Star Wars Encyclopedia by Steve Sansweet.
Well, Random House now have a listing online for the book, claiming a November 4th release. This now stands alongside the original Amazon.com listing... but there's also Steve Sansweet's own advice to take into account.
Sansweet urged caution. We know that he's working on a project with Pablo Hidalgo, but until we hear official confirmation, we should be wary of taking these listings on trust. The fact there are now two pages for this book makes the news more likely to be true, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily accurate yet.
Thanks to Zee Zee from UK-based fansite Star Wars Books for the heads-up on that one!
Secondly, the eagle-eyed and indefatigable Eddie van der Heijden from the fan timeline site Once Upon a Galaxy has spotted an announcement from Penguin Books, revealing a whole slew of Young Readers titles tied-in with The Clone Wars, all due for a 26th July release: this link takes you to the original PDF file.
We don't have any titles yet, but there's a list of several books: a $6.99 novel (bear in mind that this is almost certainly a young readers book); a $4.99 activity book; a $6.99 photobook; a "jacketed picture book" at $16.99 (I'm assuming this one's a hardback); and a storybook and a "reader" both at $3.99.
It looks like there's quite a spread aimed at the younger fan here. The interesting thing is that these books are coming out from Penguin, or to be more specific, their Grosset & Dunlap imprint. I don't think they've done any Star Wars books before, though they're part of the same publishing conglomerate as Dorling Kindersley, who've done a lot of Star Wars books over the years, and they were also involved with the distribution of the Star Wars audiobooks until 2007.
Update: the sharp-eyed Zee Zee from fansite Star Wars Books has contacted us again... this time with some extra information about the kids' books, mainly gleaned from Amazon.
No titles yet, but we can now ascribe an author to each book on the list, and while none of these writers seems to have been involved with Star Wars before, they all do have some background in the sort of tie-in books that they're involved with here:
* The $6.99 novel is written by Tracey West, who's written a number of children's books, perhaps most notably in the Pokemon franchise.
* The $6.99 photobook is by Zachary Rau, who has been involved with similar adaptations for animated movies including Cars and Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie, again for TokyoPop.
* The $3.99 storybook and "reader" are by Mayer Kirsten and Steven Brezenoff. Not sure which author goes with which title there, but I suspect "Meyer Kirsten" may be the Kirsten Meyer who some sites list as editor on another TokyoPop volume, while Brezenoff co-compiled a Buffy tie-in called The Quotable Slayer, and has a book called The Thing in the Woods coming out from children's book publisher Stone Arch.
Of course, we'll bring you more news on these stories as soon as we hear it!
