Hold on to your hats, Star Wars fans. Entertainment Weeklytalked to Paul Lee, president of ABC's entertainment division, about the possibility of ABC, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company, picking up the long-awaited, much-delayed Star Wars live-action TV show. Lee told EW that the show was on the table as far as potential future Lucasfilm projects were concerned. "We haven't even sat down with them," Lee said, referring to the principals at Lucasfilm. "We're going to look at [the live-action series], we're going to look at all of them, and see what's right. We weren't able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It's definitely going to be part of the conversation."
EW also provided the following summary of the series in their story:
Sources say the live-action series centers on the story of rival families struggling over the control of the seedy underside of the Star Wars universe and the people who live within the subterranean level and air shafts of the metropolis planet Coruscant (the Empire?s urban-sprawl-covered home planet). A bounty hunter may be the main character. Set between the original Star Wars film trilogy and the prequels, the time period allows for all sorts of potential appearances from classic figures from the Star Wars universe.
That description certainly fits with previous reports about the show. Whether Disney's television arm will decide to green-light the show is an open question, although their decision to produce the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show as an extension of their Marvel movies certainly bodes well for the Star Wars equivalent. Check out the full story at Entertainment Weekly for more information and speculation.
UPDATE: Here's a line in the story that I initially missed but that I think merits further consideration:
"Already one Star Wars-related project is in the works for kids network Disney XD."
Now, from the context, it's clear that this project isn't The Clone Wars. Seth Green's upcoming show, Detours, isn't mentioned at all, so some fans might believe that this line is referring to it. But given that Detours has been announced and was extensively previewed at Celebration VI, it doesn't seem logical to refer to it as simply a "Star Wars-related project." If this project is Detours, why not say so? We already know that the show exists.
My theory? This Disney XD project that's in the works is the third Star Wars TV show that George Lucas accidentally teased at Celebration VI. During The Clone Wars Season 5 panel, Lucas made a surprise appearance and said the following:
"[W]e're trying to do things that other people aren't doing. We are gonna try to do a younger-skewing show, and we're working on that. At the same time, we're doing Detours, which is so far off the clock we don't even know what that is."
Again, context is key: he wasn't referring to Detours when he said "younger-skewing show." Plus, given what we know now -- that Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm was looming in the minds of Lucas, Dave Filoni, and every other Lucasfilm employee at Celebration VI -- it's possible that Lucas accidentally revealed tentative plans for a new show that would take advantage of the Disney deal he'd recently made.
