Disney Buys Lucasfilm: Theme Parks, Anyone? Posted By Eric on October 31, 2012
The fact that Disney now owns Lucasfilm gives the parent company tons of opportunities to leverage its gigantic reach to produce new Star Wars content and experiences. One of the things that George Lucas mentioned while reviewing the span of his franchise, in addition to the books, movies, and TV shows, was the idea of theme parks. Obviously, something like this already exists in the form of the Star Tours attractions at various Disney parks. But what if Disney took things several steps further and built an entire park dedicated to the Star Wars universe? There's certainly no shortage of material from which to draw, even if one is sticking purely to the movies for inspiration.
Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm obviously makes a dedicated Star Wars theme park more likely, but we now know that yesterday's deal eliminated a specific and long-standing roadblock to any such park.
Today, Entertainment Weekly's Jeff Labrecque spoke to Star Wars artist Tom Hodges, who created a mockup of a Star Wars theme park for a print that he sold at Celebration V in 2010. Fans may remember that these prints sold like hot cakes at CV and it was very difficult to find one of the giveaway posters unless you arrived at Hodges' booth at the right time. That fact alone speaks to the excitement that the idea of a Star Wars theme park generates.
I found out when I was doing the map that Disney had a contract with LucasFilm that they could not put a Star Wars theme park in a country that has a Disney park. But now that Disney owns LucasFilm, the sky is the limit.?
Fans who have been wondering for years why Lucasfilm didn't just launch its own theme park finally have an answer: contractual obligations. Now that that issue has been neutralized, it's entirely possible that Disney will look at giving Star Wars a bigger venue at some point in the future.
