Here's the lowdown on what was discussed at the Star Wars Books panel, on March 18, between 3p and 4p.
The panel, which was hosted by editor Erich Schoeneweiss and included Paul Kemp (Crosscurrent, TOR: Deceived, Riptide) and John Jackson Miller (Knight Errant), featured a lot of Q&A with the authors. But there was also some other things revealed from Erich that are of interest to fans.
Del Rey will be publishing Jonathan Rinzler?s The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Says Schoeneweiss, "This was really a no brainer. Jon is going to get started with all the preliminary research pretty quickly. We?re planning on publication of the book, which should mirror the hardcover packaging of the first two, in October 2013."
Next, as some fans have already seen, Star Wars Insider #124 featured the awesome short story about Darth Malgus from author Paul S. Kemp, called "The Third Lesson." The next issue (Insider #125) will feature an original short story by Christie Golden about Vestara Khai called "First Blood." The issue after that (Insider #126) will feature an original short by Timothy Zahn story called "Buyer?s Market" about Lando and set in the same time period as his upcoming novel Star Wars: Choices of One. Schoeneweiss adds, "We?ll follow those with at least three more short stories in future issues of the magazine. So fans looking for more original short stories should start picking up Star Wars Insider magazine."
As previously announced, there will be reissues of the paperbacks for Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. At the time of the announcement Del Rey said that they would each include an original short story in addition to everything that was already in the book. Schoeneweiss can now confirm that author James Luceno will write the two short stories for each book and that both stories will feature Darth Maul. He explains, "James wrote the Darth Maul short story that is already in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter ("Saboteur" ed.), so that re-issue will now have two short stories by Mr. Luceno. James is also currently working through some story ideas with Del Rey Editor-at-Large Shelly Shapiro and we hope to have more info about each soon." Both books will be re-issued early in 2012 to coincide with the 3D release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Whew! That should keep us going for a while. As always, be sure to stay tuned to updates on Del Rey's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/starwarsbooks) or get further details on the events at C2E2 this weekend.
UPDATE: It was also revealed at the panel that Shelly Shapiro has James Luceno's manuscript in for his Darth Plagueis novel, which Del Rey intend to publish around the first of the year. This the previously announced and cancelled novel from 2007, that has found new life!
