Wicked Lasers' Sith Series Spyder III Laser

Posted By Mike on May 5, 2011

So, do you remember the ever-so-dangerous Spyder III Arctic handheld laser that came out last year from the Hong Kong-based company Wicked Lasers? Not only were there som questions regarding the safety of the gadget but Lucasfilm initially sent the company a cease and desist letter due to its obvious likeness to the lightsaber. Lucasfilm then backed down from their request as is cited in a LFL letter from July 27th (via CNN). Check out a couple of the quotes below...

"We are aware that, during this time you have made several statements to the media insisting that your product is not intended to resemble a lightsaber and is not marketed by your company as either a lightsaber or as having any connection with 'Star Wars' or Lucasfilm,"

"We appreciate the clarifying public comments that you have made," Lucasfilm said in the most recent letter, from attorney David J. Anderman. "We have noted that apparently in response to your public comments the press coverage has changed since we issued our cease and desist notice."

Thus the legal mess went away. But now Wicked Lasers has created a double bladed version of their Spyder III laser and have dubbed it as part of their "Sith Series." Well that sounds a lot like a Star Wars product to me. If there was any doubt as to the Star Wars connection, check out the product description from WickedLasers.com:

"Wicked Lasers strikes back with the new Sith Series handheld laser by incorporating two dual blades of scintillating energy into the world's first double handed laser. Delivering twice the power, the world's most powerful handheld laser now shoots backwards too. This is truly the most dangerous and awesome laser we've ever created.

The double-bladed upgrade to the Spyder 3 was devised by the dark lords at Wicked Lasers after the widespread success of the original Spyder 3 and the legal battle that ensued. At last we will have our revenge.

The shaft of the Sith laser is a design leap forward with a Spyder 3 laser on either end locked together by the Spyder interconnector. Two blades of laser energy means double the power and double the possibilities."

Get your $599.95 Spyder III Sith Series laser while you still can. Unless there's now an official connection between the companies, we may very well hear of another C&D in the coming days.

Thanks to our friend Justing for the heads up. (via Gizmodo)
