The Lucasfilm Vs. Ainsworth Battle Concludes

Posted By Mike on July 27, 2011

It seems as though the ongoing conflict between Lucasfilm and London prop designer Andrew Ainsworth is finally over in the UK. While some media outlets are reporting an all-out Ainsworth win over LFL, the rulings were a bit more mixed. At the end of the day though, Ainsworth did win the major battle.

Ainsworth and his Shepperton Design Studios were instrumental in the creation of Stormtrooper helmets and armor for the original Star Wars back in the 70s. In 2008, and then again in 2009, British courts had ruled that Andrew Ainsworth was free to sell Stormtrooper replicas against claims from Lucasfilm that this was a copyright violation. The lower court rulings were based on the replicas being functional and not necessarily works of art. Ainsworth had hoped that the 2009 ruling in his favor was the end of the dispute but Lucasfilm vowed to take the case to Britain's Supreme Court.

As of today, the Supreme Court upheld the ruling allowing Ainsworth to continue selling his Stormtrooper replica helmets and armor in the UK. The court also ruled that Ainsworth had voilated LFL's U.S. copyright when it sold the replicas in the United States.

You can read more about the new ruling at the BBC.
