More Fanboys Drama

Posted By Mike on February 23, 2008

By now, I think we are all aware of the drama surrounding the "non cancer plot" re-cut of Fanboys. Cinematical put up quite an in depth article this week filling us in on the latest happenings. Click here for the full post, for it's worth the read.

Here are some cliff notes:

-Kyle Newman is officially off the film and has been replaced by Steve Brill (Without a Paddle, Little Nicky) More on Steve in a bit.
-Both versions of Fanboys were screened and the re-cut version only scored 2 points higher than Kyle Newman's original version.
-Cinematical's source also claims that their may have been plants in the audiences to push people towards the new cut of the film, but this has yet to be confirmed.
-Brill re-cut Fanboys again adding dirtier jokes, "F-bombs" and even some nudity. Still with these additions, the new version only gained 2 more points with the test audience.

What the heck happened to the movie we were so excited to see? A movie that had already been screened and loved by Star Wars fans at CE.

Following up on the article above, click here for a report from "Jek Porkins" who is leading the charge against the re-cut Fanboys. He got an e-mail from new director Steve Brill and it's not too uplifting. (Beware of some choice language)

I don't know about anyone else but I just want to go back in time to when there was this cool little comedy coming out about Star Wars fans headed to Skywalker Ranch to get TPM for their dying friend. No production drama, no worries, just fun expectations. That's gone now, regardless of what version of the film you hope to see. And regardless of which film ends up being better (from a certain point of view), my thoughts go out to Kyle Newman. Like his vision for the film or not, his vision has been taken away from him. It can't be easy.

One more random thought, what does Lucasfilm think? I thought they lent some of their effects based on their appreciation for the film. What do they think of the re-shoots?

Thanks to Seth and "Sideshow" for the heads up.
