Ford Reportedly Open To Playing Han Solo Again

Posted By Eric on November 5, 2012

If there's one thing Star Wars fans have long suspected, it's that Harrison Ford would be the toughest "get" for any event involving a reunion of the Original Trilogy cast. Whether it was a Celebration or a new set of films, we've always thought that the 70-year-old actor would have nothing to do with it if it had "Star Wars" in the name. Ford, it was assumed, would rather be known for playing Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan, or even Dr. Richard Kimble than the roguish smuggler whose exploits launched him into the entertainment stratosphere. Now, Entertainment Weekly's Geoff Boucher is reporting the following surprising rumor about Ford and the new Star Wars sequel trilogy:

Harrison Ford is open to the idea of bringing Han Solo back to life on the silver screen in 2015, according to sources close to the just-announced Star Wars sequel, but don?t be surprised if his contract includes a mandatory death scene for the sly old space smuggler.

?Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he?s upbeat about it, all three of them are,? said one highly placed source, referring to Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, the trio that made a hyper-speed jump to global fame on May 25, 1977, the opening night for George Lucas?s original Star Wars film.

As you may recall, Ford said in a 2010 interview that "I thought [Han Solo] should have died in the last one to give it some bottom ... George didn?t think there was any future in dead Han toys."

If this new rumor is indeed true, it would represent a major puzzle piece falling into place for the sequel trilogy.

UPDATE: EW's Boucher, responding to skepticism about anonymously-sourced rumors, had this to say on Twitter about his Ford story:
