"Travellin' through Hyperspace ain't like dustin' crops, boy!:" Creating Lightspeed and Hyperspace FX
by Jedi Knight Toren Depor
To a first time viewer of Star Wars there are many scenes that are absolutely unforgettable. Obi-Wan igniting his sabre in the Mos Eisley Cantina, Han Solo gunning down Greedo in the same bar and then walking out casually as he says "Sorry about the mess," and the Millennium Falcon jumping into hyperspace.
In every single one of the Star Wars movies we have seen an example of a ship going into hyperspace in some way. Sometimes it's as simple as watching a ship's engines flare brilliantly as it shoots off into the vastness of space, or as complex as the bizarre tunnels that vessels see while travelling through hyperspace, and then of course there is the most recognizable effect of all, the appearance of hundreds of stars elongating into lines as they accelerate beyond the speed of light.
This tutorial will explore the differences in all of the hyperspace effects and show you how to create them all. As always project files and example images and movies are included, as is a downloadable version of the tutorial and a project file.
NOTE: All of my tutorials use centimeters as the unit of measurement and SMPTE as the measurement of time. To alter these settings, go to Tools>Options>Units Tab and change the "Unit of measurement" to Centimeters and "Show time as" to SMPTE (00:00:00).
