eBay Today 1276: BoShek & The Irrelevance Of The EU

Posted By D. Martin on October 23, 2012

Star Wars can be interpreted in so many ways, and who are we to say that anyone's view of George Lucas' epic tale is wrong? Certainly not me. No. If anything, I think what makes us different defines best what makes our community so amazing. That, more than anything else, makes The Star Wars Generation what it is; and who we are.

Before we had six films to tell the full story of Anakin Skywalker's life, there were many scenes I (we) took for granted in the Original Trilogy. Many lines of dialogue from A New hope have more power now than they did before, even scenes like Owen and Beru discussing how Luke had too much of his father in him, or Obi-Wan's reluctance to tell Luke about how his father died. These scenes were strong when we first saw them, but knowing the history behind them, they have become two of the most important scenes in A New Hope, if not in the whole twelve plus hour saga.

In more ways than we can fully appreciate, Episodes I-III have done nothing but legitimize Episode IV. In looking at all six films, without prejudice, it is very clear that the first three films altered how we look at the fourth film (you know, the first one released theatrically) in very poetic way.

But lets look past the broad strokes for a moment and look at the scene where Obi-Wan spoke (inaudibly) with a pilot the Expanded Universe has called BoShek. Before having the full story, we had an irrelevant conversation with a dude with big sideburns that led to Obi-Wan meeting Chewbacca. After Revenge Of The Sith we know that Yoda and Chewie are pals, and since Yoda and Obi-Wan are also buddies, the old friend of a friend rule comes into play.

With the events of Revenge Of The Sith in context, watch the Creature Cantina scene again and think of the inaudible dialog between Obi-Wan and BoShek as this:

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Hey dude, if you don't mind, please make room so I can converse with my pal Yoda's buddy Chewbacca, and in return I'll Jedi Mind Trick the Tonnika Sisters into doing a little somethin' somethin' for you if you know what I mean...

BoShek

Oh, you mean the Wookiee behind me? Sure. Set me up with the Tonnika Sisters and you've got a deal, so long as you also Jedi Mind trick toymakers to never produce action figures based on them..

It makes sense, at least to me, that Yoda (via Qui-Gon's spirit perhaps) would have instructed Obi-Wan to seek out Chewbacca for safe passage to Alderaan. if not, why would Chewie have been introduced in Revenge Of The Sith? Is it not fair to say that he was equally dedicated to protecting the children of Anakin Skywalker? Is it unreasonable to think that Chewbacca helped bring balance to the Force more than any other supporting character? From my point of view, I'd say he was in cahoots with Yoda and Obi-Wan and he did everything he could to nurture and protect the siblings... and in doing so Chewbacca helped save the galaxy, and that's why we all neeed more Chewie stuff in our collections.

Chewbacca! What A Wookiee!
