CV: Dark Horse Comics Panel

Posted By Jay on August 16, 2010

At noon on Thursday, Aug 12, 2010, the audience was greeted by Randy Stradley and some special guests to talk about Dark Horse's 20th Anniversary of publishing Star Wars comics and their new storylines and titles.

Joining Randy on stage were Jan Duursema, artist for Star Wars: Legacy, with Imperial Knight Ganner Krieg, Dave Marshall, editor of Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars: Knight Errant, Jeremy Atkins, director of marketing, and they were all joined by Jaina Solo, Darth Vader and Boba Fett.

Randy started off reminding the audience that the final issue of Legacy hits shelves this coming Wednesday with issue #50. But shortly after that John Ostrander and Jan Duursema will be continuing the story in Star Wars: Legacy - War. This title is a 6-issue mini-series and will begin in December 2010. After that series, Johna and Jan will be up to "something unexpected." Let the speculation begin.

The next titles they talked about were Star Wars: Invasion - Rescues (currently on issue #3) and Star Wars: Blood Ties (coming in two weeks). Invasion - Rescues follows Jaina Solo, Finn Galfridian and other members of the New Republic as they deal with the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, while Blood Ties tells two parallel stories, one with Jango Fett and one with Boba Fett. The Dark Horse booth had a fun Blood Ties promotion going on where they distributed Boba and Jango Fett masks for the fans to wear.

Randy then segued into The Force Unleashed II, which will be written by game writer Haden Blackman. This comic will not be an adaptation of the game story, but rather a parallel story told from the point-of-view of bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Dave Marshall discussed the continuing series Star Wars: The Old Republic currently on issue #2. This title is printing the web comics that have been presented on The Old Republic website, and will continue adapting "Blood of the Empire", the current digital series.

Randy returned with the reveal of a new title for 2011, Darth Vader and the Lost Command a 5-issue mini-series, also written by Haden Blackman, and featuring everyone's favorite Sith Lord.

Jeremy Atkins then called out John Jackson Miller from the audience, who arrived on stage with Kerra Holt, the star of the newest title Star Wars: Knight Errant. John mentioned how this new title will also tie in with a novel (also written by JJM) from Del Rey. The comic drops in October, while the novel will be out mid-January 2011.

The biggest news came when an Imperial Guard walked up on stage and whispered something to Jeremy. Randy then revealed that the long-limbo-ed series Crimson Empire III would be hitting shelves next March! Written by Randy and Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson, the art will be by series artist Paul Gulacy with Dave Dorman covers and will run 6 issues.

Some other titles and tidbits that were touched on include the following. A new hardcover edition of Dark Empire to benefit Cam Kennedy who is suffering health issues presently. Mick Harrison and Doug Wheatley will return for the next arc of Dark Times, sometime in 2011, most likely following the conclusion of the Invasion - Rescues story arc. Fans of the Marvel omnibus reprints will be getting the Ewoks, Droids, Blackthorne 3D issues, plus some "other goodies that haven't found a home" after the main run of Marvel comics have been delivered. Not mentioned in this panel, Dark Horse Presents is returning next year, and Star Wars will have a place in it. Expect Tales-like stories to enter into the DHP issues from time to time.

Dark Horse is also ramping up their digital content, so fans can expect other delivery options for their stories in the coming year.
